Indeed the typical VHF repeater conversation is quite dull. It's a combination of the demographic and the statistical fact that (as a broad generalization) the people who spend much of their day chatting on the repeater don't have

Can you comment on latency-sensitive video (Meet, Zoom) versus latency-insensitive video (YouTube, Netflix)? Is only the latter “streaming video traffic”?

It made me sad when I got into amateur radio to learn that SRI had shut down their famous HF (shortwave) transmissions just a few years prior. But I still listen to podcasts and streaming from RTS/SRF. They do great world news coverage

I think in language learning it’s important not to over-review content for this very reason.

I once saw Sussman speak in a group of about 20 neuroscience PhD candidates in an NYU basement. He was talking about AI interpretability long before it was in vougue. Anyways I asked one question and he immediately sensed there was an EE in

True, this could be a nice layer of protection for the runner of such a service, but the point of LLAMA safety is to protect Meta. For an open weights model, model users can trivially put text in the assistant side. The point is that these

Appreciated. Could be a fascinating read, how societies through history have maintained internal order with various approaches to security. Did Rome have police? What about the Venetians or 16th-18th century europe? Any reading recommendati

Huh. I’ve bluffed that once when I was getting bad service because I thought it would get the agent to pay more attention. Can’t say it had the intended effect, but they did not hang up. I just got a “yessir”.

Can you comment on different models for international employees of a US startup who split time between their home country and USA? It seems clear that they could come a few weeks a year to USA for training, meetings, etc. but coming for a y

If we end up with a compute governance model of AI control [1], this sort of thing could get your door kicked in by the CEA (Compute Enforcement Agency). [1] https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/ai-safety-fundamen

The very same! It was the intro to compsci for engineers that paired with the robot project… c 2007. Another kind of sad Tewks story is, once I went to see him in his office, and I witnessed him giving a grad student and early edition copy

Thanks for links to some of the more interesting ones. This could be useful for understanding compatibility of plants below ground. The dandelion for example seems totally innocuous, whereas goutweed leaves no space for others.

I’ve been playing with my son, but using my shoebox full of old cards, many with an “IV” logo so must have been around 4e that I was playing back in the day. The game is complex, but a good intellectual challenge for a bright 6yo reader.
