You can still use optical media (CD/DVD) or USB keys to install packages with APT, so I don’t see how Slackware would have any advantage over Debian there. There’s even a apt-offline[0] to create a list of ‘needed’ packages on one syst

That is exactly the effect described by the GP: People appreciate you trying to speak French and help you out in whatever way they can, in this case by switching to English. The point is for you to give a decent first impression by doing so

At this point, I don’t think that the distro matters much, as there is quite exactly nothing there except for the kernel, udev and the very first steps of startup.

Wikipedia mentions a couple of ‘von Bose’, and I have to admit that I don’t see any particularly tight link between ‘Bose’ and ‘böse’ – the umlaut does have a special pronunciation, after all.

He certainly had an interesting life, but I don't think the person giving their name to half the particles in the universe can be called ‘a little forgotten’.

This bit of the fusion research is mostly aimed at making small-scale experiments on weaponised nuclear fusion without having to set off nuclear bombs every other day. As a long-term energy source, it is assumed to be rather unusable.

It might have been difficult to combine blinking GIFs with JPEG artefacts – that said, it wasn't all that bad with the mouse on the ‘next’ link and tapping of the left mouse button to read the next slide, at least it works in Opera :)

I’d go so far to say that someone should file a bug report with Opera if they are lexing extension code for each page individually, rather than compiling it once on startup and then using the compiled code for the individual pages.

Well, even though the extension lives on the local hard drive, it could still make loading it faster: At least with HDDs, people made experiments gzip'ing the Linux kernel in /boot (or parts thereof) and using the CPU to unzip it

Isn’t the problem with detecting bad randomness that you can’t be sure about your decision? That is, if you accept a certain probability of falsely identifying a RNG as biased, I don’t see why this should be a fundamentally difficult prob

Well, yes, but the author equated (in my reading) The One True Time with the wall time/time provided by NTP and such, which clearly jumps around and is UTC. The ‘perfect egg timer’ is, if anything, comparable to the monotonic clocks.

While the article in general is great, the author’s assumption of one true time is rather cute :). At the very least, there are: - the actual number of seconds that passed since the epoch, i.e. the number a perfect egg timer would show if y

Regarding the kernel.org hack: Even with git’s hashing, wouldn’t an attack on Linus’ – or even a subsystem maintainer’s – computer still be a viable way to get code into the kernel, as said code would be a variant of new, unpublished code r
