I work in private equity so I've been keeping an eye on the crowdfunding space and the quality of the equity on offer is -- to put it lightly -- unbelievably low. I saw one company offering a SAFE note that only paid out if they went p

US included a payroll protection program (PPP) in the CARES act last month, which pays for payroll for small businesses with some forgiveness provisions. The forgiveness terms are very roughly summarized as, "don't lay anyone off

I'll venture a guess that by Wednesday the news cycle will be deep in the implications of very high asymptomatic case count... Assuming we don't start seeing contradicting evidence.

It's not strictly true that chess is the only sport that is the same whether played over a board or online, poker comes to mind, and in fact most board games would qualify. Regardless, as a chess fan it's great to see them adapt t

The whole "reduce, reuse, recycle" approach isn't tenable. Even a very environmentally conscious US lifestyle still produces a very substantial appoint of carbon emissions. For more, see how Hans Rosling covered the idea in h

Not true at all. You simply bring in the workers through an employment agency. AB5 does not impact consultants.

The truly big games, in terms of hours played, seems to be online multiplayer. MMORPG, FPS, whatever DOTA is... those are the games where some people start putting in 1000+ hours per year. Problem is close to everyone can enjoy TV and movie

The drink units are weird in this article. Most people (in the US) think of a drink as closer to a 1.5oz 80 proof shot or 12oz of 5% abv beer, which works out to 17.75ml of ethanol. The article defines a drink as 10ml of ethanol. So the gui

I really wish this was a continuing series on research that gets picked up in the popular media. There's so much questionable coverage out there.

Seeing as wealth is rarely in the form of cash, and you need to pay taxes in cash. You would need to sell the wealth, creating income, which in turn is used to pay the taxes. So it seems right.

Presumably the reason for changing the rules is to limit the number of draws, because wins and losses are more exciting. As he mentions, high level, full length chess has a rather disappointing percent of games ending in a draw. However, he

Option three would be to not distribute cash through dividends or buy backs and reinvest directly in the business. In that case the net result and tax treatment is about the same as buying back shares. Trying to treat buy backs as a special

Reporting, like teaching, sadly falls into a category of jobs where the demand (for the jobs themselves) far outstrips the supply of jobs. It seems almost wrong because journalism (and teaching) is so important to our collective understandi

Articles misses that this is in response to SF's gross receipts tax. Payment processing is an ultra low margin business, no way they can compete while paying ~1% of revenues to the city.

Kind of, it just needs to be sufficiently liquid that you can meet the capital calls as they come. If you've got 10% of a portfolio committed to a VC fund, you can keep the rest in the S&P and just sell shares as needed. However, y
