Of course companies exploit (as in make use of) open source software - it's free (as in beer and speech). As a developer, using open source without proclaiming that to the rest of your company is hardly plagarism. Unless a licence forces a

I would really like to be able to see all the articles that were submitted since I last visited ordered by their votes. That way when I don't visit HN over a holiday or a busy weekend then I know that I won't miss anything important.

One important thing about TDD, in my view, is that you have two separate descriptions (the test and the code) that agree. If you get your code generated from your tests then how do you detect bugs in your tests?

Sounds like bad science too me. The energy put into breaking a hydrogen to oxygen bond will be the same as the energy release when forming the bond - which is what happens when hydrogen and oxygen is burnt. Just think conservation of energy

I think the line between an IDE and a text editor is not that clear and instead there is a spectrum of editing. At one end you might find Leafpad (aimed at simple text editing) at the other end something like IntelliJ. IntelliJ provides mor

In my view they are definitely a monopoly (not convinced? try http://www.techcrunch.com/2009/03/01/what-an-antitrust-case-... ). The question is whether they are abusing the monopoly. Probably not at the moment. However, as the original qu

Not quite sure why you lump ARM in with Qualcomm and Broadcom. I would think it would be great to be ARM right now with more than 10 billion ARM processors on the planet.

On one project I worked on, we divided all feature requests into small, medium, large and huge (expected to be roughly 2, 5, 10, 20 days worth of effort respectively). This allowed us to come up with a quick overall costing of the project b

It might also depend on the licence of the original project. For example, a project originally released under BSD could be re-released under many different kinds of licence.
