The JDK is where a lot of the power of running on the Java platform comes from. It is an enormous library and you will never know it all thoroughly. It will, however, definitely be worth your while learning the parts most relevant to you.

Microsoft already have something close to the kernel only product you propose that they create in response to Chrome OS - Microsft Server 2008 Server Core. I don't think that it can start in 7 seconds - and that's without having .Net, Silve

How about if Apple could certify the apps instead. Developers can pay to have confirmation from Apple that the apps is safe, but they don't have to. That way users have the choice.

You don't have much space left in 64 bits for some financial numbers. FX swap trades with a billion dollars on one side and some very devalued currency on the other (e.g. zimbabwe dollars 1:60,000,000 at one point). It gets worse when you s

Java has had non-blocking IO since 1.4 was released in 2002. The only thing new here is discussed on page three of the article - some extensions to the non-blocking IO API.

I particularly liked the analysis on the impact of patents. Essentially, no important software innovations have been patented.

I once had this kind of response from a lawyer when I told him what I did. I said to him that if you needed a criminal lawyer you wouldn't ask a intellectual property lawyer you met at a party to help out. I could see him thinking about fee

Each user could pick how many other users they want in the forum. They would get a random sample of all the users. Not happy with the selection? Kick that person out of your forum and get another one from the pool automatically.

Intractible doesn't mean impossible: perhaps someone will come up with a great new approach. The proof says nothing about what is possible with a finite tape. I hope you now feel that I have made a point that is, at least vaguely, relevant.

If you don't have infinite memory (and who does) then there is no proof that a halting oracle does not exist. In fact, there is a proof that such an oracle does exist. So, yes, we can solve the halting problem where there is finite memory a

If the tape is finite then there are a finite number of states. In which case a halting oracle can exist - it detects repeated states. I can't see how we can assume an infinite tape exists - there has never been such an implementation, nor

If you restrict yourself to a limited amount of storage then it is possible to decide if a given program halts. There are not many pieces of code that run with an infinite amount of storage.

The halting theorem, which this result relies on, relies on the infinte length of the tape in the turing machine.

Your warning about IE6 is undismissable. Why go to the extra effort of deliberately blocking IE6 users? An IE6 user is probably quite happy to view your site with a few layout problems. Please don't be a hater. For what it's worth the site
