A lot of corprotation have a very hard time moving workloads to the cloud due to regulations alone. In some places it's a compliance nightmare, a landing page with "trust me, we're secure" from AWS is far from enough for

Seconding Designing Data Intensive Applications by M. Kleppmann. Gets you from “zero to hero” in fundamentals on scaling large distributed data platforms. Wondering if there are equivalents on modern approaches to security.

This is the way. Unless you are huge, self hosting and even colo is not competitive with long term VM commitments in hyper scalers. They get big discounts on everything you'd pay retail, and their margins for barebones VM is not that l

Indeed. It's like saying life is just long strands of DNA composed of only four simple molecules. Or economy is just people trading their surpluses. Emergent behavior... emerges. It's hard to predict or explain from constituents.

You use both. Once your data fits comfortably in memory it's naive to try to build histograms, pivots and charts using pure SQL.

IMO, the main benefit of those exact algos are the they provide optimality bounds, allowing you to make informed decision to continue or stop and provide a non-optimal solution. This is valuable in many practical situations. >Time schedu

At $DayJob, we deal with OR problems for large companies and typically, when possible, we leverage Gurobi to solve Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MIP) formulations. However it's not unusual for the problems to be huge to the point e
