We also hand roll and rebuild things over and over again. We try to make abstractions and building blocks, but we aren't very good at it compared to other fields. It'd be like an electrician wiring up a house, and building the ele

Whether we're bad at software engineering or not doesn't seem to be the point to me. I think the point is economics and other factors causes us to forego engineering almost every time. The space shuttle control software is a massi

Interesting. I wrote the article a long time ago, but I still use the approach it describes to this day. I have this setup on Ubuntu MATE 18.04 without issue, running MATE 1.20.1. When you say super key, do you mean the windows key? And hit

I think an even better approach is to tell MATE to use i3 as its window manager. It's totally seamless and works perfectly. Here is a blog post I wrote on how to do it: https://www.mattgreer.org/articles/mate-and-i

FWIW I would expect the OP's real objection is having to buy a Mac to develop iOS apps, not the annual fee.

It might depend on the person. I used to be an avid unicyclist, including commuting to work on one every day, and my groin always ached from it. Adjusting, sitting up, etc, never really helped much. It's the main reason I don't re

I have found this is true in the Bay Area as well. The really congested freeways seem to be bad from about 7 to 10.

I run Ubuntu MATE 18 on three different Thinkpads and they all work perfectly with zero tinkering. The only issue is they chew through the battery in no time, but since I’m almost always plugged in I’ve not bothered to investigate a fix.

Heck I’d even say many tech companies are like this. Their core product works and is for all intents and purposes “done”, but they still keep growing. Dropbox is a good example IMO.

I’m also starting to feel like if anything will dethrone React, it’ll probably be Vue or Svelte.

I generally agree, but despite this companies still do it sometimes. UPS is a great example. Ditching Paul Rand's timeless logo for what they have today, a real shame.
