I don’t know at all, but if I had to guess extension usage is pretty low. I’m not sure the average user really sees browser extensions as something they need. They aren’t as obvious as say mobile apps. On the flip side, extensions like Hone

I can’t see how a healthy browser extension ecosystem would help Google. Without Google getting any real value out of it, it makes total sense they do a poor job managing it.

In my experience most companies are not investing enough in QA. A lot of companies are moving away from dedicated QA roles and falling back on tests that devs write and crash reports. Both are good to have but not a substitute for proper QA

I built my own budgeting app and I strongly modeled it after Google Inbox. After importing transactions, you then need to get to “uncategorized zero”, which is identical to inbox zero. I like that it’s much less tedious than manual entry bu

I like to dig in a bit more and learn the fundamentals underpinning things. If you understand the http protocol, then any web server you encounter is easier to understand, for example.

I wonder if Dropbox devs would say CoffeeSctipt was a net negative. The authors mentioned how it made supporting IE11 easier for example.

Most solutions seem to be aiming for a quick fix. HN’s classes and HTML probably rarely change, but using css variables would lead to a more maintainable solution than duplicating all the selectors. (I’d contribute a solution but currently

You should be able to let tsc do it for you with a properly configured tsconfig file. Mostly just want it to not emit any polyfills.

But it brought along its own footguns. The article has one example > For example, we had a major production bug in the fall of 2013 due to a misplaced space character.

Only thing I still miss is noop functions are two characters. Everything else I liked is in JS now that nullish coalescing landed.

It can cause surprises. One of the biggest ones is turning a loop into an expression if it’s the last thing a function does. Edit: here is an example https://coffeescript.org/#try:-%3E%20%0A%20%20for%20i%20in%2...

Since wasm has native browser support it doesn’t really feels like it fits into this group. I have a feeling in a few years wasm will be pretty common.

I’m curious why not allow implicit anys instead of creating the tool that inserted anys? Seems roughly the same outcome but implicit anys would take a lot less work?

Our stand up is a daily thread in slack. Totally painless and useful. Very often they lead to better collaboration and cutting off duplicate work before it really starts. FWIW I work on a small team at a very large company. Possibly that’s

Communicating blockers in stand up should be for heads up purposes. Just to let everyone else adjust expectations on your work. If you’re waiting for a stand up to kick off resolving a blocker, that doesn’t seem right.

I would guess it took quite a shift for the Valve of today to make Alyx. I barely even think of them as a game dev anymore.

Just about every major website will continually prod you to install their app when viewed on a phone. I have given in myself a few times just to make the nagging go away. That muddies the “web is a failure” argument imo.

Although I’d argue the real goal of Alyx was to entice more people to take the VR plunge. That’s bad luck with the pandemic, as I’m sure the $1k price tag (more if you need a better computer too) is hard to do for many in this climate.

The name bothers me a bit. Social distancing does not make us “safe” just “safer”. It worries me that people might think things like masks and possibly this tool are more effective than they actually are and become complacent.

True. Very top talent can basically do whatever they want. But there’s a spectrum and I think a wider range can benefit. I think you and I are mostly disagreeing on that. I think today a lot of “good but not top” talent find themselves cram

You can hoist useReducer out to context and end up with essentially a very lightweight redux. I’ve had some success with that in smaller apps. For something large or long term I’d probably avoid that approach though.

Their SF salaries that anchor this tool seem pretty low. It states $160k for a senior/staff level backend engineer and $185k for frontend.
