Yeah I saw that in your article. I’m wondering why bother with the cloud server? Why not scrape all stores from home?

Myself and the person I was replying to ran our scrapers from our homes. One benefit being the IP address doesn’t get flagged. Curious why scraping from your home network doesn’t work for you?

I did the same thing when I was running a scraper. I throttled the requests quite low to be respectful so it took a while to gather all the data, but it worked just fine. For this article, does the OP feel they need the proxy due to scrapin

Try it again, the author said he fixed it in the comments on his page. It is working correctly for me on iOS.

I took a stab at putting Linux on a MacBook about 4 years ago or so. I found dealing with the Broadcom wifi and bluetooth more hassle than I bargained for, and switched to a Thinkpad. Has the Broadcom driver situation improved? I was surpri

Not sure if the blogs from tech companies can really count here. Those articles are made with the company's interest in mind, typically to boost recruiting. In my experience, they are always written on company time.

Modern browsers support very long URLs. Chrome supports URLs up to 2mb for example. Probably makes sense to think about the impact on users before using such long URLs, I have found it confuses people, and can also make sharing things on so

Do you believe you don't need to compromise morals to work at Google? They're not the most wholesome of companies. You pretty much need to compromise some morals to work just about anywhere. Just Facebook stands out as being more

When has self promotion here been frowned upon? It’s even officially supported with “Show HN” posts.

That is very common practice on HN. Submitting a link here is a lottery that one rarely wins.

As a counter, if you look at the code, there's a lot of DOM api calls littered throughout which obscure what is going on. This could be relieved by pulling out the DOM manipulation into common constructs that all parts of the app use,

It appears the entire app was written with vanilla JS. That's just an observation. I wouldn't have expected that nowadays. The app is super impressive!

I’m confused about the blog-posts repo. Why wouldn’t that be the only data source? Why would you want to pull in other repos?

The kicker with Gatsby is it’s actually not compatible with GitHub or any hosting where you can’t control caching headers. Gatsby relies on page-data.json files to not be cached[1] in order to work correctly. This is not possible with GitHu

What do you mean by SSR with Gatsby? Dynamic rendering at the time of page request, or rendering static HTML at build time? If the former, can you share some links?

I’m a Gatsby fan and have built several sites with it. But I do recognize it’s a dead end at its core. Its main use case is data driven static sites, and it does that case very well. But when it tries to extend beyond that, the results are

I don't really use too many apps overall. Most of my bugs are in the core OS itself and Safari. For example, I get hit with this one pretty often (blank page in Safari): https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2507400

Interesting. I wonder if usage patterns are a factor here. I also dual carried android/iphone (actually, I still do). I honestly consider the iOS of today the buggiest software I've ever used.

I just switched to Android because iOS is so incredibly buggy. Android is pretty buggy too, but not nearly as bad. I'm afraid we're currently living in dark times for software :(

I like the Santa Rosa area, Sonoma, even the Sacramento area can be nice if you’re ok with hot summers. I’ve never been to Palm Springs myself but have heard good things. Ventura is also reasonable considering what you get: beach, proximity

We wanted a quieter, slower life. We researched a lot of places in the Midwest and south and Michigan came out ahead for us. We’re also right in the middle of my parents and wife’s parents. I plan to work remotely for the rest of my career,

Are you looking for major cities/tech hubs? California is huge, plenty of very nice and affordable areas if you are ok with being away from a major hub.

I just moved to a small town in Michigan from San Jose this week. I love the lack of traffic, my giant backyard and deck, how completely quiet and pitch black it is at night and that I have yet to meet a software developer. Nothing against
