Does that 100 year rule apply to undeveloped areas? My neighborhood is 20 years old and before it existed, it was wilderness in the middle of nowhere. I wonder how well flood data is tracked for that type of land.

Reviews for entertainment are of very little value, and always have been. The only time this isn't true is if you get to know the reviewer and understand that your tastes and theirs line up. I suppose if something is universally panned

My personal experience has been quite the opposite. My side projects (and my blog) have been instrumental in me getting two key jobs that really boosted my career quite a bit. I'm not saying "you should definitely do side projects

The fundamentals change much more slowly. Like http has hardly changed at all until 2.0 showed up. So you can take that knowledge to Laravel, Rails, Express, whatever. I've always felt digging a little bit and getting down more into th

My Dad always had a computer in our house, starting with some very early machine (pre Apple 2), then an Apple 2 then many PCs. I learned Logo and Basic. I coded, but very casually and just for fun. It wasn't until many years later in c

Gatsby is a great idea, with a questionable execution. Being able to build your entire site with React, make all of it statically rendered, and then opt into interactive/dynamic parts as needed is really great. Pulling in data sources

Heh :) a lot of current devices I buy still use usb micro. I'm mostly dealing with modern fpga recreations of old game consoles like analogue.co's products. Maybe usb-c has some kind of licensing cost that makes it prohibitive for

I could see it being great if all your devices are on it. But when you have usb-c, usb micro, usb mini and usb-b devices, the cables are a total pain. On top of the special pain usb-c brings onto itself. I have a cabinet that is basically d

According to this, Netflix recommends at least 25mbps for 4k https://help.netflix.com/en/node/306 I honestly don't really know, video encoding is not my thing.

Netflix originals are mostly (or possibly all?) available in 4k. Or are you saying the 4k streams are not of good enough quality?

I have a 1080p Vizio from about 2013 or so. It's "smart", but doesn't phone home or anything. I use a Roku to get more modern apps for it (I block Roku's phoning home in my pihole). I've considered upgrading to

I can definitely say a lot of focus and innovation is happening on the studio side of Netflix. This is where tools for casting, managing the logistics of filming, budgeting, etc are being built in order to scale up Netflix's ability to

You're right. I've not worked at all top companies, but I would still say the lesser known ones had good employees for the most part.

There are many reasons I left, but mostly I'm interested in trying new things. I want to either pursue freelancing or find a role at a small company. Two things I've never really done before. As for the culture. It's not near

I don't think I can effectively answer this one. I fall right into the "average developer" bucket and have never worked at Google. So I don't think I have the proper exposure on this.

All of the above, the great qualities came in many different ways. But I think a common theme was the ability to increase leverage and have a multiplicative effect. Sometimes this meant being an expert on a certain technology to better leve

I left Netflix about 2 months ago after over 5 years working there. Overall I would say the average developer there is about on par with any other company I have worked at. But the great ones were truly, astonishingly, great.

The Advantage (I have the Advantage 2) is simply excellent. It took me about an entire year to fully adapt to it (this is with a very long tail, I was very productive within a few weeks, but 100% adaption took that long). I also type far fa

The section talking about the first commercial doesn't seem right to me. By September 1990 the system had been out in America for over a year. And there were quite a few earlier commercials that did not have the "Genesis does what

Vim has another problem. Once you grok it, it's very difficult to use anything else. If I ever find myself in an editor without some kind of vim mode, I'm totally hating life.

Curious what language/env you tend to work in? I have found that working in JavaScript and TypeScript, I don't really need any plugins when using VS Code. I do install a couple, but none are essential, just some small niceties.

Usually you don't have to worry if the house next door is going to get torn down and a hotel raised in its place.
