In my experience, developers have been choosing dark mode for their editors for many decades. That doesn't feel like a fad to me. Edit: but to be fair, I agree dark mode can be bad in some contexts like the examples you gave.

It's a shame user stylesheets never took off. It'd be nice if we didn't just have prefers-color-scheme but also a set of standard css variables for colors we could set and get a consistent dark/light mode on websites. I

I've been using vim for a bit over a decade now. But throughout that time I bounce between actual vim and vim emulation. Lately I've been concluding emulation is better most of the time. The problem with real vim is maintaining yo

Depends on what your needs are. For example if you are working on a team, Vercel* automatically deploying feature branches is extremely useful. Pushing a new blog post to your personal site? FTP is probably fine. *Can't speak to Meli a

I was in a very similar spot about a year ago. I decided to take a sabbatical. Just recently I have found my interest in programming returning. I was just really burnt out. Early on in the burnout I seriously questioned if I could ever prog

On CRT displays, a pixel can be rectangular. It depends on how many pixels are jammed into a line, which is completely arbitrary. This causes oddities with emulators as pixels are always square on modern displays. This is especially an inte

I feel like we're in a transition period where we will eventually get both the nice developer experience and flexibility combined with nice performance. Gatsby gets there largely by accident and in a crude way. I'm hopeful over ti

I've always been curious about HD's website. Surely being so slow costs them a lot of missed sales? I would think a large successful retailer understands that. Is it just bureaucracy or do they genuinely think their website isn&#x

You can get the best of both worlds with Gatsby plus gatsby-plugin-no-javascript. Gatsby inlines critical css and small images and does just about every trick available to minimize page load, then the plugin kills the hydration. The plugin

Huh, I had Sonic fiber over AT&T and loved it. In May I moved out of the bay area and now have Comcast cable. I'd do pretty much anything to get Sonic's level of quality out here.

Sonic might be the best avenue to get this fixed. They care about their customers and presumably can talk with AT&T in a much more meaningful way.

Why aren't partials a substitution in the context of Tailwind? The only goal is to keep classes DRY.

Facebook's stylex might also be interesting to you. No idea when (if ever) they will release it, but one thing it does is compile all the css down to atomic classes https://www.infoq.com/news/2020/04/face

I might be overreacting to past projects, but I've almost always found bespoke css gets out of control. Most projects tame it with well defined values for margin, padding, etc, and applying and enforcing those values means you sort of

You don't have to use React and JS to get components. You can still get components with server or build time rendered HTML. About the only time you can't is if you are writing html and css files by hand. If you have some kind of c

There's something to be said about being able to build out an entire component with just using your editor's css autocomplete. The name "tailwind" is really apt once you get the feel for it. The authors did decide to &#x

I felt this way too until I started using Tailwind. I feel like Tailwind (and perhaps atomic css in general) is one of those "don't knock it till you try it" kind of things. But, with that said, I do feel Tailwind relies on c

You seem to think I am stating Prettier removes all arguments and opinions. I said it "reduces the opinion surface". If some other formatter becomes popular, debating between it and Prettier is still way preferable over arguing ov

Because the opinion boils down to "use Prettier" or "don't use Prettier". If you have a team that can agree to that, then all the arguing over formatting completely disappears. You're trading trying to find som

Software development being so opinion based is really irksome if you ask me. Code reviews often boil down to battles over opinions, people get caught up in bikeshedding a lot, and "famous" developers on Twitter can see their opini
