Maybe I'm not understanding the question but best practice is usually to store everything in the database in UTC time (or epoch time) and do the conversion using a localtime offset when you display it.

My ex-military officer friends tell me the corporate world is considerably harder than the military. Maybe it also depends on where you work / what you do.

The NYTimes magazine [1] ran a piece in 1996 says a 35 square mile landfill, 100 yards deep, will store all US trash until the year 3000. To put that in perspective, that's about 1 tenth of 1 percent of the range land currently availa

It's very possible there were several and nobody noticed them, or nobody attributed them correctly. There are also the Spectre and Meltdown attacks which exploited Intel cpu pipeline bugs regardless of the OS running on them.

But senior management is responsible for establishing the resource budget and dictating the requirements. Given infinite resources, conceivably an engineering team could make an infinitely secure product. But nobody has that (except maybe

Agreed, the packages in Centos / RHEL are all super old. The RHEL license structure changes all the time and depending on which one you get it may or may not include the extended repos.

Lately it seems to me Debian and Ubuntu have made some strange package decisions. They have morphed into a desktop oriented build with snap packages and auto-updates enabled by default (among other strange decisions). There's a ton o

I've run multiple marathons in my life. When training and running > 20 miles / week, I could eat anything I wanted and still lose weight. I usually stayed around 170/lbs - about optimal for my frame. It didn't matt

No, it says "Sold in the last year". That implies laptops sold in 2020. I agree, without quantifying anything it's just marketing. More interestingly, will there be any software available I'll want to run? Running iPh

Harder surfaces are actually easier to run on than dirt trails. You get much more of the energy you put down with each footfall back. This is important because your foot is basically a spring and designed to recover some of the energy put i

I have a 3. I got it in January and I'm still on the fence about it. It's okay, but not awesome, and sometimes darn irritating. I guess there's some merit as a cellphone replacement but I find the screen too small for that

I have a dishwasher that I use regularly. I never do step a. I usually just take a napkin and dump anything left on the plate into the trash before putting it in the dishwasher. My manual says no pre-wash is necessary and I have never ha

Have you ever taken a dishwasher apart? I have and it's an unbelievably simple machine that they charge you big bucks for. There's a lot it could do but manufacturers are in the business of making money, not selling complex, har

Most people won't give a bad personal reference anymore because they are too afraid of being sued. We just say yes, the person worked here from this time to that time.

Are people still visiting cities in this time of COVID? I suspect this has nothing to do with AirBNB getting banned and everything to do with people not wanted to get sick.

I tend to use tmux for this. Once you are proficient it is much easier to cut/paste without taking your hands from the keyboard. Admittedly the learning curve is way steeper than some bash expansions and/or a simple rewrite func

AWS has tools around this (lifecycle manager) that you can easily leverage for simple site backups. Or you can roll your own, honestly it is not that hard to take rolling snapshots. Obviously hosting providers do not make it easy to extrac

I think you can get a 1 Bedroom in Manhattan for less than a million - maybe $800k or so. But it will be further away from the subway. So in a neighborhood like Yorkville. As always, it's all location, location, location, so it depen
