Yes. During that period when you could get 64GB in a Windows desktop replacement laptop but only 16 in a top-of-the-line MBP, they reworked their memory systems to (IIRC) do some sort of predictive paging to improve responsiveness under me

Yes, absolutely! I’ve been thinking about a project that would require an API like this. I’m a little surprised that there aren’t already several options. Was pretty sure I’d seen a couple of services that will print and send letters in env

$20K sounds like an underestimate by a couple orders of magnitude if you estimate a single year of full time work by one developer at $100K. Many mid-sized Python projects use libraries that I’d guess together represent somewhere between $2

Some Olympic-level athletes deliberately train at high altitudes because the body responds by making more red blood cells in order to make the most of what oxygen is available. This then gives them an advantage when competing at lower altit

What seems more likely to me is just that the frames they put these things in cover the cameras anyway.

Is it that hard? I've seen one get stuck on an Ubuntu boot screen (of a 5+ year old Ubuntu version, no less) with messages about loading MySQL. I mean, at least they weren't using Win98, but that's a pretty low bar.

What does “bad design” mean in the context of a system that wasn’t designed? Evolution is a process that involves tiny random changes stabilizing at or near local maxima. Where you end up is largely about where you started.

Sorry, I like my e-reader in part because at the end of a long day it can change font sizes to accommodate tired eyes with imperfect vision. Yeah, this makes page numbers inconsistent. BUT the reader also has a concept of a “location”, whic

That I don’t know. Most birds have the ability to regurgitate food for their young, but that’s not the same thing as a gag reflex. Maybe google or Wikipedia have more info?

Part of it probably has to do with lungs originating as gills. Passage of water across the gills was what was crucial for optimal oxygen intake, and taking water in through the mouth facilitates that for fish. Getting food stuck was probabl

Most “high deductible” plans (the ones eligible for an HSA account) use coinsurance for medical services, instead of copays (there may be copays after you hit the deductible). This is different from an HMO, PPO, or EPO, where you’ll have co

Most protected classes are attributes that a person has no control over - age, race, sex. Political views do not fall in that category. The big exception to that that I can think of is religion. One could debate why that’s a protected class

We've absolutely gone overboard. But certainly there's some balance that could be struck where we can keep the FEW truly unique and beautiful treasures without marking entire neighborhoods as closed to development.
