Most protected classes are attributes that a person has no control over - age, race, sex. Political views do not fall in that category. The big exception to that that I can think of is religion. One could debate why that’s a protected class and whether it should be. But in the US freedom of religion is part of our founding myth and enshrined in our constitution, which probably has something to do with it.
