That's a beautiful story. I've been fascinated by Gödel since I read Gödel, Escher, Bach by Douglas Hofstadter back in the 1980s. I'm not a mathematician, so I can't plumb the depths of his work, but I gain a little mo

I played with TECO on Unix for a while many years ago as well as a similar character editor (I think it was called SPEED) on the Data General MV8000 Eagle at Texas A&M. Editing with those editors is like solving a puzzle. It was fun, bu

Asimov's poor dialog, writing style, and character development were recognized from the beginning. His writings stood out because of the ideas they contained, which admittedly are not as impressive 50 years later because they are not n

I think it is because of our weakening culture. Children used to get their identity from their family and community, which trained you in a path you could follow into adulthood. Now, at least in American culture, there are way too many opti

If you are talking about order of operations, all of the sixth graders that I teach know how to evaluate that expression. While it's true that I had to teach them * means multiply and / means divide, they can quickly pick that up.

Your English notation is not really an S-expression. I would say it is similar in that the operation comes first. Even though people understand such notation for simple expressions, most people are not used to doing advanced (beyond element
