You are very (very!) generous with this. Tokyo ain't CA (for example, I can't imagine he would want to drive anywhere for a good while). There are more forgiving environments (and processes!), but it sounds as if he's going t

If so: Get promoted. I love it, because it has cut my commute down 10 hours/week and my dedicated meeting time 10 hours/week. That's 20 hours. Now I can dedicate 5 hours of that to taking walks or naps or cooking healthy food

Beyond "tribal ideology" idea clustering - there are tribal collections of shared assumptions, but personally there are also hierarchies of values. Out of (say) 5~12 "values" that might matter to most persons - they are

It's hard ! For me the biggest problem is discovering/finding (often accidentally) where I need to introspect and/or drill-down. It doesn't occur to me to examine unexamined assumptions - at all. It's like a blind-

Sorry - for asking - but I have been baffled for a long time about these "requests"... Do you expect other people to read and summarize, so that you don't have to? (I'm guessing "Yes" - which is why you asked..

I have a little of that with O'Reilly Safari. (Currently) they only charge me $199/year, but are thinking to raising the price to $499. I'm thinking I would rather buy their books one-off. But I buy a shit-ton of stuff at ~10

I used to! The dry-cleaner shut down as did 8/10 restaurants (This is in Northern Austin). All the chains stayed open, so I guess that is something?

May I ask where you live? pixelarity.com has a hundred-or-so (I haven't counted) Bootstrap templates that save me time whenever somebody wants me to set up a small website (for free - I hate that), and for the $5/month or $20/

Well, that is very gracious - esp. here. I value yours. You have different experiences than I do - so our conclusions will differ. That said - I "feel" as if C++ is a dangerous serpent of a language. Maybe I need to spend 6 months

Fair enough. Thank you. In my case - C (as a language) had a smaller footprint, and if the targets were limited, it was easier to learn, to lint and to code-inspect. Admittedly, this was mostly before C++14. I guess this might be a case of

That makes sense. Thanks. (I still prefer C - but I am admittedly getting old and C++ sucked in the mid-90s or so) EDIT: BTW -- I am not going to argue with LUA throughput. I'm still not sure what the thinking was there (maybe time-to-

Honest question: In what way? Platform wars are over-ish. We have the same compile targets. What they call "Undefined Behavior) is relegated to ... well ... platforms we are not supporting. C is fast - simple - easy(ish) to learn, and

I'm learning to believe that there are various sub-sects of the HN crowd. The people who would rather pay $3/month to host a slow-ass VPS, and those where $10/month delta, as long as their work-flow is optimized is a "wi

Is C++ generally considered to be "better"? I've always looked at it (esp. with STL) as kind of a "Swiss-Army-Chainsaw" and you were going to shoot your eye out. Maybe that view is old and things are better - but I

Thank you for that article. I like to think that I keep up with what some call "Freakonomics" (not the book, but the concept), and I had never come across that succinct and well developed model. Again - thank you.
