Typically the big LLM providers write in the their ToS that it is prohibited to use their output to train another LLM. Whereas for a book it is fair use.

It is legal to train LLMs on books but illegal to train on output of LLMs. Perfect - an absolute steal for 1.5B.

Lots of money in tech influencing - but most is from the big players (OpenAI buying tbpn, early access to select influencers etc).

It is obviously a marketing stunt. And hugging face are fools for letting themselves be used in it (remember hf - no open source - no hf). You create superduper capabilities by careful tuning and training but you also have no constraint or

Shooting for the moon and then be surprised when you actually land there. I hope they wire up new hardware quickly to handle the demand.

It is a principled play by the Chinese. You would not have Xi showing up at AI conferences and speaking quite clearly had this not been the case.

Absolutely, you can say that. But in terms of tech, high quality open source ai is a real equalizer - and I applaud that.

Yeah. But I think in the developing world it is a common viewpoint: That tech monopolies and ip is continuation of western colonialism and exploitation. Xi is not speaking for deaf ears here.

Xi shows up at the Shanghai-based World Artificial Intelligence Conference and reaffirms China's commitment to open source AI; I guess they sense that they have a good thing going and is doubling down on that.

Ray-Ban Wayfarer used to be a such classic design. By associating them with cameras and Meta, Ray-Ban risks messing that up for good.

It is curious - you would think they would love it? But they don't - is it simply the case of the Chinese beating them - stubbornness and pride? Or is there something more going on? Toyota was seemingly decades ahead at one point with

Interesting that neither meta nor xai chose to do open source given that they are both clearly behind Google, OpenAI and anthropic - and a serious us open source offering would give them a clear foothold.

Operating systems and office suites (like windows and word) have big network effects and high switching costs. Much less with llm chatbots/coding tools.
