Ultimately they had to if they wanted BIOS to be able to boot CD-ROMs. The BIOS boot sequence sticking around for so long is an unfortunate consequence of it becoming a decentralized standard outside of any one vendor's control, and so

UEFI doesn't much care what sort of storage medium something is on, so long as it is capable of reading it and it has a valid EFI partition. It is much less picky than BIOS, for which the El Torito standard had to be invented, and can

Those large ones are large and important enough to receive substantial rewrites/overhauls when necessary. Those rewrites can be very expensive, and are completely infeasible for most software projects that don't have huge backing

Sounds like a great way to get your IMEI blacklisted by the carrier (and drop/miss calls a lot), and would not really stop them from triangulating your position (because you still have to be physically in range of all the towers, and w

That doesn't have any impact. The memory isn't on-chip, it's just on-package. This makes it no different from if it was fully external. This has also not been a problem for any other unified memory system (which typically als

There actually aren't really any benefits outside of manufacturing. Trace length is a marginal factor in memory performance/latency, and having the memory on-package versus only slightly further away doesn't mean much. I'

There's not really any reason it would be slower. Being on-package doesn't offer any real performance advantage (the lengths of the traces to memory have a negligible impact on performance or latency), and is more of a benefit to

I'm not aware of any currently-available non-Apple ARM chips on TSMC's 5nm process. Can you name some?

There's not really any magic to it, they just need to implement PCIe and include memory slots instead of hardwired chips on the package. There are other ARM systems that already do this.

I agree with the rest, but memory latency is actually pretty poor on the M1: https://www.anandtech.com/show/16252/mac-mini-apple-m1-teste...

I have been trying to explain to people that having the DRAM chips physically next to the SOC on the package does not actually meaningfully improve memory latency. I get that people on this site are excited, but please be excited about the

The optimal shape for most markets is a duopoly. Both competitors get a large enough stake to continue growing, but don't really meaningfully compete, and don't have to worry as much about antitrust.

There are a lot of tremendously unprofitable monopoly plays riding this sort of dream train, particularly since 2008. Which ones will work and which ones won't is hard to tell, but that is indeed what investors are betting on. At least

Which is also the Apple approach. Mac OS is pretty terrible at sleep and wake on non-Apple hardware, but of course it is, Apple doesn't test against hardware they don't support. In both cases it isn't anything wrong with the

This sort of criticism isn't about content. Simply having something like that happen in the plot is different from saying something interesting about it. Those sorts of plot elements are core to the genre, and are an expected part of a

It's also fundamentally untenable in a world where the purpose of the ads they replace is to pay for the content you're viewing. The web needs a real solution to the problems ads present at the moment, but we're unlikely to g

It was not made in 2018, that's just the latest renewal of the ruling (which was originally made in 2010). Apple's attempts to make it illegal were denied at the time too, because even without the ruling it fairly obviously falls

There might not be as many hateboys, but what I have found is that Apple fanboys are significantly more defensive, and often respond poorly to criticism, and are generally at best dismissive of it. This is probably a result of being so freq

What a really funny coincidence that it just happened to degrade in a manner that massively benefits corporate interests too. My other favorite coincidence is when I put a coin in a vending machine and a can comes out the bottom.
