Canonical paper on SQL query optimization. By Patricia Selinger. The dynamic programming algorithm for determining join order proposed in this paper still forms the basis for most of the query optimizers used in modern relational systems.

No, we live in a mild climate so the cost of ERV outweighs the benefit for us. I researched it, but balked at the high price of the unit, and the idea of adding lots of ducting in the attic. Instead went with separate AC Infinity (grow-roo

We remodeled to tight envelope + radiant heat but our architect failed to spec fresh air ventilation. We had to DIY it mid remodel and learned a lot in a hurry. The one room that we didn’t get any fresh air flow to, now stinks. The others

Great article. As another 40 year programmer I strongly agree with the “software is young” sentiment. Coding is fun but the way we tend to go about it is insanely boneheaded! I was in the Computer History museum in Santa Clara the other

Article states this is “plastic that otherwise would be dumped in the city’s overflowing garbage heaps.” Environmental impact of these plastics should be weighed relative to the impact of those same plastics sitting in said garbage heaps.

To have your tight house (and your family) breathe properly you’ll want to couple your smart bathroom exhaust fans with filtered air intakes. HRV/ERVs can do this but are overkill in many mild climates. A set of simple fan+filter pai

The PM5544 brings me back to many a late night long ago. When every one of the 16 channels (where I lived at the time) showed one of these patterns, you knew it was time to go to bed…

Yes and add to that the ability of many of these large-battery vehicles to self-drive. For example when the owner is working during the day, the vehicle could drive to a regional charging station. This could help with the distribution com

Agreed. The use case I am hoping to help solve for is health care workers (eg. Nursing home aides) who have a very limited supply of N95 masks that they wind up having to re-use for multiple days / weeks at a stretch. If they have ac

There is quite is quite a bit of information readily available about sterilizing disposable N95 masks with UV-C light. While not nearly as good as a fresh mask, this might be a preferable alternative to reusing the same mask unsterilized.
