It's not necessary for something to be a single binary for someone to call it (and for it to be) "monolithic". Each utility in GNU coreutils is useful indipendently from the others. If each systemd binary is (almost) useless

I doubt it's even possible for USB3 to support high-end graphics. The bandwith for intensive applications is just not there, and not having direct access to memory (like with PCI-E) could be another obstacle. Everything is possible, su

People (outside IT) are not interested in knowing more about tech. For them technology is nothing more than magic, and they have no problem with that, nor at work or at home. Having an iPhone in your hand does not make you a "nerd&qu

Until thunderbolt stop being a proprietary technology, I hope it will stay where it is right now: ready to disappear into irrelevance when OCuLink (finally) comes out.

Crawling private mail for public displayed results? I seriously hope that's not what happens. OpenWRT does not support any type of automatic update, AFAIK.

Just a random correction: custom plugins and modifications can be placed outside the custom/ subdirectory of oh-my-zsh by setting the $ZSH_CUSTOM variable. Still, in my opinion, antigen is a good idea :)

Guake in GNOME3 was pretty broken the last time I used it (a lot of time ago, it was the thing that made me switch to a tiling WM). Something changed lately?

DevOps objective is not to reduce costs. DevOps does nothing to reduce the head count of developers/operations. This is a dangerous misconception. The objective of DevOps is to make working trasversally between all groups involved wi

Are you implying that new cars rarely need fixing and are much more efficient because they are completely closed down and harder to work on than old cars?

The shift of risk to the employees started when executives realized that they could cover they mistakes with a "reorganization" and still get a bonus in the end.

While I think screens will never completely disappear, I feel that many of the appliances that are gaining them now (refrigerators? why?) should lose them as soon as possible. Those screens do not make the appliances that have them better o

No, and I'm sorry I was not able to explain that properly. :) We should not (re)write a lower level where all the components are so coupled we will be unable to change one of them with a better alternative without changing the rest.

Sure, it needs to be taken care of and the creator of that page recognize that when they say "We do recognize the need for a new init system in the 21st century". Systemd is trying to do TOO MUCH, instead of being a part of a larg

When everything will use systemd (because all the "core system" is starting to depend on it, wayland included) how do you evolve out of it? Rewrite the entire lower level of your system AGAIN? That does not help evolving rapidly,

The systemd init is FAR more complex than a basic init. Service status management? service file (of all types) parsing? IIRC all done in PID 1, with a nice (?) dbus integration and a glib loop added in for some additional fun. Some think t

I hope that's not the only standardization we will get, since I don't really like vendor lock-ins (talking about Windows...) and I think we need something better than that. Silly me? I know. And still I don't like it. Maybe

I really hope we get a contender for the linux servers space. Maybe it will be Canonical, maybe not, but having Red Hat/CentOS everywhere (in new deployments at least) is starting to tire me.

Maybe they were talking about how easy is to find existing libraries that do what you need with that "pick up", instead how easy is "to learn" those languages for a Java dev? Otherwise it makes little sense to me too. :)

Even if it was C, does it really matter? I think everyone in tech knows (or suspect, at least) writing good C is hard. Very hard. But there is something comparable we can use? Something that can offer a similar level of interoperability?
