An external standard (de facto or not) is always better when dealing with things like this than a internal API. If I want to reuse that daemon for other things I know what to expect and how to operate it indipendently.

Gentoo, Arch at least (and related distros). I also believe Fedora does that.

Closed NVIDIA/AMD drivers do not implement EGL yet, and that is IIRC a prerequisite for Wayland. That could be a reason, unfortunately.

It's probably not. Those projects do not have a comparable userbase, so that is somewhat expected - but that missing popularity comes with another set of problems...

The reason people get so crazy about this debate, at least, is that many see this as "land grabbing" done in a passive/aggressive manner by RH employees (merging udev and systemd under the same repo and having to build system
