Note for those who (maybe) don't know: skarnet is the author of S6 [1], a supervision suite similar (and yet different) to daemontools/runit. 1. http://skarnet.org/software/s6/

Sure, the question is why fix something that is not broken? Why should someone write a systemd journal format reader (but journald is just an example here) when text files work already? Why rewrite tools to support it? If you get to the po

You assume the other system is a linux box with systemd installed. That may be true, or may not be true at all. :)

VServer and Jails/Zones are not really the same thing, IIRC, and 1.0 was around 2004 too anyway, while still not offering equivalent functionality. If I remember incorrectly, I stand corrected on the timeline! I've got no problem

I don't find it really that surprising. Some shared hosts run very old/outdated PHP versions (at least one I know still uses 5.2). At the same time many, many many linux servers are never updated after the first installation...

They could have the need to create Linux VMs, and that was the best way to do that. It does not mean porting KVM is "exciting OS work", though. Even the actual craze around linux containers technology sometimes baffles me. Zones&#

Upstart was tested enough to ship in RHEL6. It does not mean it works perfectly and has no bugs. But systemd IS NOT only an init system. So if systemd 208 (until 213) by default saves the core files in the journal and your core file is bigg

So now instead of syslog we have journald AND syslog - we only doubled the risk of something going boom and taking away our ability to log. I don't think that's nice.

No. This is _bullshit_, and people should really stop saying this. A lot of components (OpenSSL? GCC? LLVM?) are in that repository merely for convenience but ARE NOT developed on internally (except for patches to make them work, eventually

The debate around systemd is not only technical, but also highly political. Systemd is a shift towards the "aggregation" of many separate projects/components of the linux core userland (udev, polkit, wayland, logging, sessio

So does rc.subr under freebsd. Or openrc under gentoo. I would not be surprised if all that boilerplate present in the shell script was now in /etc/mail/make now. No Fedora system around to check this right now, though.

Unfortunately HTTPS is unable to protect you in a school/office setting, or wherever you use a computer provided to you by someone else. In those cases, certificates can (and will) be forged very easily.

No, what BSD's have is the analogue of what in Linux land are called "coreutils". The rest is usually code from external sources mantained inside the tree for consistency.
