I'm not sure I agree. For several reasons: a) The phenomena of qualia remains unexplained. This has no bearing on making something that can mimic consciousness, but does become significant if one wants the real thing. The last argument on t

My impression was that it was a developing story: they only told it to the point that events had progressed to. It mentioned her getting laid off, so this seems likely.

There doesn't seem to be any reason you couldn't get xpdf/evince/okular to run. He got X and QT running... For this reason, and the internet connection, I would probably get one, if they were available where I live... And the internet conne

Sure, but look at what those companies will do to stay in a strong position. I know Microsoft is an extreme example but look at the damage they did in the last year: OOXML, sabotaging OLPC, FUD in general...

I'm a high school student and until recently I always thought I'd go into academia, simply because I have a low tolerance for greedy people trying to use ideas for their benefit rather than societies. But I'm beginning to see that the insid

It strikes me as unfair to judge an organization based on what they did almost 40 years ago... Also, lots of universities/scientific organizations (and I think even the US military) were messing around with that sort of stuff at the time.

I just reread the first chapter of Penrose's _The Emperor's New Mind_ so this is based off of it. Let's simplify the problem to just conversation, for the sake of simplicity. Suppose we have a program that can pass the Turing test... But th

(I'm not parent, I'm the one who originally asked the question.) Certainly, a _scientific theory_ is judged based on its predictive power. This is why I mentioned my opinion, earlier, that science is "the art of useful fiction." The goal is

It's pretty clear that your taking a scientific-materialist stance. So, my question to you is how do you explain qualia? Qualia is a term describing the actual _feeling_ of something as consciously perceived. Wikipedia explains it better:

Seconded. X has only crashed once or twice in the last 3 years of me using it. This may be anecdotal evidence, but then again so is the article.

You're forgetting that there are other reasons for looking at this besides supporting this idea or thinking it could work.... For instance, I upvoted it because it is still thought provoking. People trying to game a website to donate rice?

Writing a kernel is fun... I started writing one a few weeks ago. It's not a real one, just something to play with. But it's very interesting, probably because I'd never worked at such a low level before. Great resource: http://www.osdev.o
