And that's why companies don't provide a lot of training. Turnover is incredibly high in SV. Most people stay at jobs for 2 years, so if it takes a year to get them to the equivalent level you're making a large investment for

This was my experience as well. I had to destroy my personal account once I left the company because they couldn't unmerge them and transfer to a new account. This was like 3 months ago and I was shocked that they still didn't hav

Same as using 1Password — you don't. You're trading convenience for increased security.

nginx is highly configurable at compile time. You can strip out a considerable amount of functionality (modules, in nginx lingo) for performance.

I agree and think you did an excellent job here. Distilling down such critical information shows how much time and thought you put into it. It's easy to ramble on for 100 pages, but capturing the essence of your values in a few slides

It sounds like the purpose of these values is to provide guidance. From your piece: > It’s a framework that we can turn to whenever we’re faced with a difficult decision, whether it be about how to best architect something, how to priori

I've heard (second hand) that VMWare has a good parallel track. That said, it makes sense for a company in which individual contributions can revolutionize the business. There are cases where being an individual contributor is only so

Probably outside of the scope of this document. Can you imagine if a Sales team came up with a set of values and part of that document specified how engineers should do their jobs? There would be revolt!

A huge missing part of the "Employees" section — which is great as a focus, by the way — is specifying how your management works. Especially in engineering organizations, a consistent problem is moving people into management posit

This is amazing for card counting. Discreet swipes to add/remove count and double tap to have your phone/watch buzz the current count. Maybe not the most ethical use of the tech, but sounds fun!

Obviously I have the option not to use it, but we can still have a discussion about the pros and cons. What I'm saying is that "pull requests welcome" is a really lazy way of telling someone to support themselves. That's

When you are running a business, you use tools to make your life easier. The reason I pay for Slack is precisely so I _don't_ have to push fixes upstream. Tools are a means to solving a problem. Something being open source is not by it

Also the mental jump. Just because something is easy for them to do doesn't mean it is worth the distraction cost. Github builds tools for developers. Atom, chat (abandoned), Pages, Gists, and github.com all fit within this. They tie i
