CS students are among some of the most hostile, sophomoric people you will ever encounter in software development. They all have something to prove, even though they've barely started themselves, so putdowns are common. Grain of salt. Expe

I made a soft-synthesis and MIDI playback engine in Haxe targeting Flash: http://www.ludamix.com/apps/triad-synth/index.html Haven't done an official port yet, but one of the NME devs did look into using it to test the SampleDataEvent API

The syntax is curly-brace, and on a surface level closest to AS3, but the underlying design borrows a lot from Pascal in terms of minimalism(something which Nicolas has mentioned once or twice): The types are based on JS without truthy or f

To elaborate: Only about a decade ago, 3D game lights were almost uniformly "additive spheres" supplemented with some ambient or directional light. They didn't bounce or diffuse properly. Environments and characters each had separate lighti

I find that sandboxed environments have a kind of inherent quality of liberation to them - a solution may be far slower and clunkier than the hardware would ideally allow, but when seen another way, you're really just "going back in time" t

I'm not in debt(yet), but I'm also in the position of "haven't really earned" and it's definitely pinching me, although I'm failing less each time, which is keeping me motivated. But your guess is accurate. People want to be hands-on, socia

Professional programming's only been around for 2-3 generations. I don't think there's any hard evidence for the skills being limited to a particular domain - rather the opposite, we keep discovering new things to apply code to. It used to

Although this wasn't the entire message of the original - I'm intrigued by the general idea of committing to a line-in-the-sand approach on streaming vs. buffering. I've been writing a fair number of file format parsers lately for various a

I have a slightly different feeling of what the internet is doing for politics. It's a subtle change, but one which I think has outsized long-term effects. Basically, my thesis is that we are generating more collective wisdom in the past. T

You can compile programs with those languages and get something that works, but on a regular basis, some programmer will say something like, "Ok, I'll use Go for project x" and get part of the way into it and then discovers... ...a critical

You market these products differently. The minimum-viable is going to have to be a free game. It may be of demo length, and it is not supposed to monetize. The goal is simply to maximize early feedback and find your customers. If it's in th

This is the company that simply yanked out floppy drives when they decided they were no longer necessary, so it's probably not a priority at all. It doesn't directly cause breakage, and a few years down the line, Retina will be everywhere.

I found a reasonably safe way to use App Engine: -Make the "app" part of a stack, not the entire app. -Only do one task at a time. -Fit the task well within free quotas. This goes against the nominal model of the service, but it's effective

Agreed, roughly. Nobody particularly likes reading callbacky code, but it has a lot of power. What we don't have enough of is "structured alternatives" for our "goto."

Being faced with that kind of struggle is good. Everyone who's lived long enough can recall some time when they were, in hindsight, a horrible person. And if you're aware of it, you're winning. No pain, no gain.

I would agree and would elaborate that the major weaknesses of C are a combination of build system issues and an overly weak type system. It wasn't realistic to have the whole compile process done in memory in the early 70's, and OS virtual
