Good to know. The news always seems to find footage of destroyed suburbs whenever the US is hit by a big one.

It’s possible that solve the hurricane problems with proper building regulations and lower the risk of huge wildfires with controlled burning. But the US as always prefers to pretend that there’s nothing to be done when other parts of the w

I have been using ZFS on Mint and Alpine Linux for years for all drives (including root) and have never had an issue. It's been fantastic and is super fast. My linux/zfs laptop loads games much faster than an identical machine run

Where I was we had a self-service system as well that the university was very proud of. It's just that a lot of the things you could do on there would create a task for a human on the backend instead of having the computer just do it.

Yep, pay is directly tied to how many people are under you. And it should be no surprise that this is how it works. The operational side is hired by the academic side which is even more crazy. It's made up mostly of people who have nev

I really don't see a difference between upsell and 3rd party ads. I stopped using Evernote (was a paying subscriber) because I got annoyed by constantly having ads for their other services shoved in my face.

It's absolutely still an ad; ads sometimes include samples, like when they hand out small bites in the supermarket, those might be tasty ads, but they are still ads.

I don't mind new features, but I do very much mind when those new features change the UI, upend how things work or just add clutter. Not invasive is a good way of putting it, I don't mind new features that are not invasive.

Nope, IMAP can't provide the kind of smooth reliable experience that the Fastmail mobile app provides. Now they obviously could have done it in many different ways, but I know from experience with IMAP that it can't do it. The amo

Sure, but I imagine the reason you haven't started your own company to do it is you need 10s of millions in compute, so the price would be 500k + 10s of millions... Or you can't actually do it and are just talking shit on the inte

Seriously... The ability to identify what physics/math theories the AI should apply and being able to make the AI actually apply those are very different things. And you don't seem to understand that distinction.

I found that gpt-4-turbo beat gpt-4o pretty consistently for coding tasks, but claude-3.5-sonnet beat both of them, so it's what I have been using most of the time. gpt-4o-mini is adequate for summarizing text.
