Thank you for sharing this story. I’m sorry to hear about professor Busi. My introduction to computer science was also HtDP and your experience mirrors mine exactly. The people who were the most upset about it were people with exposure to J

Fair enough. I don’t considering your complaints about Math.random() or division by zero to be a fair reflection of “real world use.”

This matters in the real world question of “should I use elm” even if it doesn’t matter to the theoretical question of “is the elm language sound?”. Especially since there is only one implementation of elm that updates very infrequently.

No the core question is “does the time and effort spent on those cases justify the cost of switching to elm?” I have to weigh the benefit of no runtime exceptions against things like having to write interop code for libraries that I may hav

I literally have never experienced a bug because of the existence of Math.random(). I don’t think I’ve ever used it outside of a coding interview. Similarly, I don’t spend time debugging runtime errors caused by document.querySelector()? If

The NHS is probably concerned with stability, accessibility and performance. Also I would like you to please explain why sass and Nunjucks are not good for “satisfying changed requirements” Edit: Also, are you serious that GDS should consid

Would this be more impressive to you if it were React or Angular? Your users don’t care that it’s Nunjucks or Sass. Nunjucks and Sass are perfectly fine.

This last presidential election was decided by several thousand votes in a few states. There were even closer local elections this year. One persons vote doesn’t ever decide things, but if you can’t see the absurdity of everyone taking that

I don’t know anyone who does that. they might be well informed, I would have to see what they were reading but yes I would agree that 23 hours a day of news is not helpful. This is absurd.

I mean the title doesn’t help. You might even call it click bait. I think the “everyone should read the news” culture that Aaron describes is a straw man. Most people I know who read the news regularly know that it’s partially entertainment

If all you do is read voter guides then you have delegated your critical thinking to the organization that produces the guide. I would not call you a informed voter if all you do is read a voter guide every election.

Are you talking about Iraq? I’m pretty sure the problem there was war, not democracy.

Yeah this post is literally the same argument as “my vote has never changed the outcome of an election so why vote?”

This is fine. Guessing gender based on things like name is terribly error prone. Imagine if you have a name like Taylor. But I’m sure everyone who wants to be annoyed by this will find a way to be annoyed.

> The word “sad,” for example, scored low for both warmth and competence. “Melancholy,” on the other hand, scored high for competence and low on warmth. Why can’t “sad” be used in a “warm” context?

It's pretty well agreed on HN that you get what you pay for, and anyone who complains about being unable to hire good developers simply just isn't compensating well enough. Why on earth would you not want to pay a better qualified

This show is pretty good, but take it all with a grain of salt and recognize that the experience of the two hosts is not representative of all engineering jobs. Still lots of good advice though: https://softskills.audio/

I think you’re reading too much into it... the candy desk is always a republican because it is on the republican side of the chamber. Perhaps democrats just wanted to be able to grab candy on their side of the chamber. Or they wanted differ

My experience is the exact opposite. DDG works well for most things, especially programming, but when I want to find the address of a local business Google is much better, probably because they use my location.

I’m sure that people richer than me can’t imagine living the way I do. I’m trying to point out that if you’re in the upper middle or upper class, your standard of living isn’t applicable to everyone else. I’m trying to point out that there
