Edit: I haven't been able to clearly determine if the actual initial burning was harmful (in a significant way) or not.

Yes, it is definitely improper to say the least. It also brings the profession into disrepute. I agree that it breaks trust as well as insulting dignity; and I should also clarify that my aim was not to defend the actions of the surgeon. I&

I think it is a reflection of the zeitgeist - things are once again either only good, or only bad. There is no space for bad people to also have done some good things, and vice versa.

To me, a doctor drunk at work is far, far worse. I would much rather have a doctor initial my liver but still do a good job of fixing my problem, than have a drunk doctor operate on me (or treat me in any sense actually). I suspect a lot of

I read it differently - that is, even those living the best life by modern standards still suffer enormously. We age, we must deal with biological drives, we must deal with the loss of loved ones. The best we can do (since we didn't as

This seems the best refutation I've read here so far - to strive for a Culture-esque utopia. And yet as a personal decision, in the world we live in right now, how do we justify creating another life to ourselves?

I also don't fully understand the attention given to home consumables in these kinds of IoT applications- for me devices like Amazon's one press ordering button thing are better for this type of problem as it keeps you in the loop

I too am saddened as what happens in the US will influence the rest of the world; I expect to see similar things happen closer to home if this goes through.

This would depend on the field, right? Ie in some fields are there possibly more jobs outside of academia (than within) that require a PhD, alleviating the pressure to progress from PhD->Prof?

According to other comments, people don't seem to care about who moves in / from where, rather they care about their property value being diluted.

I wish to confirm what you have written about African countries. I speak about sub-saharan Africa here. Even without donations Africa has enormous unrealised wealth and potential (minerals, gas, agricultural potential). Geopolitically also

One difference might be that continental US have not been invaded in modern times. Within living memory, most of Europe was invaded and occupied by foreign powers. This may be part of the reason that nationalism and pride in the military et

Here in South Africa a sophisticated campaign to inflame racial tensions was recently exposed. Notably a UK firm (Bell Pottinger) was hired to achieve this. To cut a long (but fascinating) story short the underlying aim is to fast-track a n

Not to be facetious, but I'd really prefer there to be fewer drawn-out videos of the nature described in the posts above. The issue of payment for content is of course real though.
