I picked some that are popular in the US because they're alternatives to TikTok. I find it hard to believe that a single medium like billboards or an app like TikTok is such a unique thing that it's a burden on people to communica

I don't really care about billboards, but they are already banned by states and municipalities.

I think "press" can include companies. How would you define a member of the press? Banning a church seems like a different topic, but I would say banning a newspaper violates the First Amendment. I'm old enough to remember th

The press is specifically mentioned in the first amendment. Are you saying Bytedance is the press? It seems clear to me that any company hiding behind Section 230 neutrality cannot also claim to be a member of the press.

Is it abridging my free speech when the city I live in bans billboards? I can no long speak by building a billboard on my land. I can post/view short videos to Instagram, Snapchat, Pinterest, among others. I don't see how any one

Please explain how my free speech is taken away by a TikTok ban. I don't understand. Depending on the day, HN is convinced that 1. free speech is an obligation of private companies to their customers 2. free speech is an obligation of

Much of car culture and related land use decisions are rooted in class and race. I wouldn't say enjoy, but it's a requirement for many.

I can't upvote this enough. People drive as fast as they can while feeling comfortable. Road design controls the outcome and the US will reduce a 6 second delay for drivers at the cost of pedestrian lives.

Reddit gave something to users and now they want to take it away. What did they expect? There was likely a path to making Apollo a paid product, letting it's popularity wain, and then killing it. Instead Reddit went for the power move

That would require getting passive index funds to change how they vote. Honestly, if their was an index fund that consistently voted for better corporate governance I'd move my money there.

Is the one we have not better than the ones that came before it? It's popular to look things like the gold standard through rose tinted glasses, but economic numbers don't support it.

Selling data erodes Facebook's ability to make money selling ads (because then other people will be able to target users just as well). It's never been something they did intentionally.

Meta revenue is from showing an ad. "Is the ad shown in the EU?" seems like a pretty clear line. IFRS rules already require tracking the action that recognizes revenue so seems hard to play games with it.

So tax $1.10 for every $1 redistributed. It's a choice to frame inflation as coming from redistribution vs the wealthy avoiding taxes.

Is it a better deal than YouTube? Last I heard TikTok has a pool of money they distribute in some magic way that's not directly tied to either company revenue or a video's view/like counts.
