> the cost of housing is high, so let's build more so we can make more money That's how markets are suppose to work. Make money by making something people want to buy. It shouldn't require a corrupt city council to have en

People prefer housing they can’t afford. Allowing housing of different densities allows people to optimize their trade offs.

The people opposing zoning changes did not do that. They moved to a suburb right next to a city so they can commute in. Getting outraged that the city grows is ridiculous.

Generally it's the suburbs immediately outside a prosperous city that start to urbanize. Genuinely rural areas in America often have the opposite problem - they shrink.

Because people moving to a city from a rural area have been making a lower salary and are now facing the high costs of a city. An engineer with a signing bonus can make the transition smoothly, but the people forced out of rural areas often

Those people get screwed the most by high rent and long commutes... that are the direct result of prohibiting dense housing.

Are you proposing an alternative measure? The market price is what affects people's budgets so that's the one I use.

There are signature gatherers out for a ballot proposition to make local land use laws override state law. The main supporters are small, rich municipalities.

The residences that cost the most are the ones that require buying the most land in the most expensive area. That's not really contradicting my point.

It's fine to prefer rural areas, but the problem is using the law to force suburbs on people that would be happier in urban areas. "Increased population density also tends to increase crime." This is a myth. Murder rates by c

For those of us not affiliated with a University, is there a way to read the article without paying $37.50? Anecdotally, there's a lot of mythology in America about the supremacy of single family exclusive neighborhoods that's con

I wonder if there's a market for a software engineering specific search engine. Skip the shitty content farms, include code from open source projects, and potentially be more smart about finding package uses

Twitter is an advertising platform and it's the ads, ad targeting, advertiser tools that change. Doing new things with a large volume of data requires a lot of engineering. "If you're not paying for the product, you are the p

Removing rent control does not address the housing shortage. The city built office space for more jobs and prohibits housing for those new workers. That's the problem to solve.

SF has one of the lowest vacancy rates in the country, which is part of what drives up prices. My point is that we need housing where the housing shortage is.

Depends on how broadly you define the problem. My points here are not that there's a complete solution so much as there's straight forward steps that do a lot of good. There will definitely still be problems after solving these.

Rent control has only existed in a handful of CA municipalities, but the exorbitant housing costs are everywhere in the SF, SV, LA regions. To your point, CA's regional housing needs assessments are state level intervention to undo cit

You're conflating pent up demand with induced demand. People want housing in SF because they work here. The jobs are the cause. In other words, office construction in a hot economy creates demand for housing.

It's the ratio of homes to jobs. "How many homes does SF need?" is hard because it's a moving target as the city permits new office construction. I ballparked the housing gap a while back by comparing the ratio of employ

Nobody claims housing fixes those things, but it is an improvement over the same people sleeping on the sidewalk. We don't need to put off the simple solutions because there are harder ones after that.
