Some of the more popular pundits are visible enough that independent researchers compile comparative reports on them versus the market in general. Their are many on the (annoyingly loud) lightning rod that is Jim Cramer (e.g. http://www.sc

You almost have to nurture a case of depersonalization disorder. If you know any successful traders, you probably know what I am talking about. They don't seem to experience or interpret things like everyone else. To be playfully ironic, I'

Profitable, yes. Consistently, depends on your view of consistency. My goal has always been and continues to be developing profitable algorithms. I have a few that are interesting, but none profitable enough to be noteworthy. (Although one

More importantly for most of the members of HN, is this worth my time at all? If markets are inherently interesting to you and you want to spend (a lot of) time studying them, then great: go for it. If you are looking to slowly invest over

As someone who has spent the past eight years studying markets and trading, I can say that these are not bad heuristics. Nonetheless, I wouldn't recommend them to a new trader. As many traders are fond of saying, you must pay your tuition i

Ditto on FUSE. I use fusecompress to store a lot of CSV data on my SSD. It was a solution borne of necessity -- I skimped on capacity when buying the SSD -- but it worked very well. http://code.google.com/p/fusecompress/

Ridley's Origins of Virtue got me into evolutionary computation, albeit indirectly, in 9th grade. I'm starting a masters (although probably PH.D.) program this fall in computational social sciences. Thanks, Matt.

Github has some good resources. http://help.github.com/ If you want to understand how git works -- and therefore know what it can do -- see: http://ftp.newartisans.com/pub/git.from.bottom.up.pdf

I live in DC. I briefly worked for a think tank whereby I was exposed to a lot of politicians. In general, those that rise are smart (shocker). They manipulate as a means to an end, thinking themselves justified. Unfortunately, everyone is

People experiment with things like that often. Search JStor for market structure or market mircostructure (especially O'Hare). Even in conventional markets there are periods of auctioning and alternative pricing structures. I studied it a w

Upgrades are the sticking point when it comes to frameworks Yes. They even cause the language to get sticky! I think Guido's moratorium was smart -- things need to be tightened. While it's somewhat trivial, having many different Python

Ah okay. Then yes, I agree with you in in that case. Going from an expected single day 10% return to not a single day 10% return is unpleasant.

If it was an error, this is the wrong way to think about things. People who had short positions with GTC limits deep into the range traveled also could have made a bundle. The limit orders would have executed damn fast. If this was an error

To some degree, I agree with you. The stimulus was a bluff that was meant to inflate confidence and bring back spending. The market is a strong signal that, if in panic mode, may arrest gains to consumer confidence. I don't want a panic bec

I don't see how the order could even be placed. An emini contract has a 50x multiplier for SPY. That's about 50,000 per contract; that's a lot of contracts. I don't think such an order could be entered without error at Citi's desk and it wo

Yea, it's appearing more and more like a glitch, human, structural, or otherwise. However, the sellers were real -- and increasing. I think there is a danger that people will see it as only a glitch and not the beginnings of trouble. The gl

This is a genuine panic -- probably the start of pretty dramatic decline. Sovereign debt is going to be the new contagion. If the contagion spreads, the gains to consumption over the past year could be demolished. These gains were bought at
