We just had one in DC (organized by Rusty) yesterday. It's a good experience; I think more cities should start doing this.

Equally sarcastic and condescending, but far more nuanced. It's a requirement of people who work for think tanks or politically motivated organizations -- on both sides of the isle -- to over-simplify. For people who study politics, economi

After being in a cast for three months, I am painfully out of shape. A friend who is a professional weight lifter recommended this book. I read it last week and was very, very impressed. There have been a few of "get in shape" threads on

I just called the hotel, but they were not particularly helpful. I was transfered four times. The only person who answered my question could barely speak English. He said, "21 and up." I've never gone to this particular bar, but I doubt tha

The canceling of the dividend was inevitable, contrary to news stories from last week. BP is worth a lot more than the cleanup costs, but they rightly fear cash flow problems. That's how profitable companies go bankrupt -- they run out of c

In those cases, I think the karmic voting system does the job of hiding redundancy more than the comments that say "this is not news." Especially because the submitter and interested commenters usually take it offensively, (even though it i

I think people who visit HN -- myself included -- experience cognitive dissonance because we immediately see a domain parking page. Judging from the persistent profitability of domain name parking, most people don't share our experience. It

I wanted the OEM harddrive. From what I understand, they are difficult to source for unauthorized service providers. (The link I responded was an Authorized Service Provider.)

I believe it's an Apple policy. For example, see: http://www.macservice.com/applemacbookair.html?_kk=macbook%2... The old drive (working or not) is returned to Apple. If you wish to keep your original drive, Apple charges a significant c

As you can see below, this post was timed perfectly for me. I was at the Apple store to get a harddrive replaced 10 minutes after this was posted. I did a little digging and wrote a blog post on the same issue, which I'll post here to preve

HackerNews is almost omniscient. I am in the Apple Store right now, waiting for a genius to talk to me to replace my first gen Air drive. I did not know I couldn't get my drive. Now I can at least prepare for the argument and try to stay ci

First, a quick clarification of 'successful'. This should almost be one of his points. (I agree with his enumerated points.) Figuring out what you want from blogging or writing or anything really is half the battle.

My desktop uses a wireless network with an external USB radio. Having the ability to physically disconnect it a few hours a day works better at countering distractions than exercising self-restraint by not opening a browser.

I don't think the number of "conservative views" on HN is particularly high. There is an exceptional number of semi-libertarians. Hayek is of particular interest because he is one of the few economists to be at least well-respected thinker

I understand articles like this are meant to introduce ideas to a very wide swath of people, but I really dislike them. There are too many disparate points. It started with unemployment; wadded into Keynesian economics; took a shot at Wall

In my experience, waiting for doctors appointments and test results is the hardest part of getting treated. When I was told I had a "brain tumor" (inaccurate, but verbatim) after a year of waiting, I actually smiled. I just was happy that

I typically like what DHH has to say. Consequently, I expected him to actually produce good comparative graphs. He did not. AAPL is '98-now() and MSFT is '89-now(). If he wanted to compare MSFT to AAPL, put them on a single comparative char
