I've often wondered if this were true in general or only in the tech industry. Do Doctors, Lawyers, or Nuclear Physicists think they know about everything else?

I wonder how much of the NT codebase is still portable. Back in the "early days" you could get NT for MIPS and Alpha ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_NT#Supported_platforms ) but I don't think Microsoft is willing to make a ARM versi

You might be surprised to hear there was extensive user testing when designing the ribbon. Jensen Harris blogged about some of the design work here: http://blogs.msdn.com/jensenh/archive/tags/Why+the+New+UI_3F... Here's a presentation fr

I've often wondered how much diet plays a role in "mental acuity." When he referred to poor children being adopted into upper middle class families that was the first thing that came to mind.

I completely agree. They can either have (publicly advertised!) caps OR they can do traffic shaping. Not both. Honestly ISP's need to move their entire offering to a "business-class" level of service (tiered, published data prices, some

I think it's more cost effective to just design components that are more efficient. I believe there is a whitepaper that was published by Google's datacenter engineers that points this out. I can't find it right now. Edit: Sorry about th

I'm not sure that was the intent. Security is hard . Most of the time these "simple" solutions are applied in the thought that we can fix our security problems easily. I think the author was just pointing that out.

Also take a look at "Skunk Works: A Personal Memoir of My Years of Lockheed" by Ben Rich (manager at Lockheed after Kelly Johnson). Despite the title, he also talks extensively about the U2 and SR-71 projects - Amazing pieces of engineerin

I had always heard that 1 page (one side) of plain text was about 1KB. Unfortunately I can't find any resources to back that up. The closest I could find was this article which indicates 2KB per "typewritten page": http://searchstorage.t

I too, would like to see this discussed. There certainly is a PHYSICAL upper bound - that is the number of people living on the planet. What would the world be like if every man, woman, and child were an entrepreneur (maybe better put - a

I boil the water with the pot covered, and then cook the pasta with the pot partially covered - maintaining just enough heat to keep the water boiling. It does take more effort, but it uses less energy (water evaporating from the surface c

I don't remember where I read it, but diffuse light from the back of the screen is the way to go. Kind of like the Phillips TV "Ambilight" that was advertised on TV a few years ago. I do this and IMHO it works well. It takes a while to ge

You are right of course, but who gave those two such autonomy? Jobs knows that autonomy is what makes Pixar so great. Will the other Disney "overloards" realize that or just grind Pixar into the ground like they did with their own (once b

I've thought of this too, but I can't get around my "moral" (not really, but that's the best description) qualms about this. We already self-select news to reinforce our bias. This idea would just reinforce the bias. Still I'm thinking a

My parents worry about the HVAC in their (more than) 3500 sq ft house. Not worry in the sense that "we might not be able to live" but worry in the sense that "turning down the upstairs thermostat a few degrees sure saves a lot of money."
