Good point. It should also be pointed out how difficult it was to sustain productive and fair policies in the dynastic system. All it took is one bad ruler to ruin centuries of progress. This is why the integrity and structure of the system

My dad has a PhD and he pretty much pressured me as others have described. I'd say it's not about education as much as about wisdom.

Experiments are at the core of modern social science. In general, econ, poli sci, etc have been moving towards a more rigorous statistics and experiments-based approach. Now whether or not you think social science experiments are valid is a

This is one of my favorite PG essays because it's applicable to anyone. I think the opposite is also valid though - an identity that encompasses all. If you think about it, it gives you the same power of objectivity as not letting anything

I feel this too. The key is to not receive what other people say as bug reports, so you won't get the urge to fix them or find a solution.

This is undoubtedly great work from a technical standpoint, but I see the real value here for other types of web apps. Since gmail already supports imap, you could've been managing your mail from a number of free mail clients offline. Just

Good support staff eventually move out of support roles. Very few companies value support employees and consequently, very few support employees feel obliged to help the company and their customers.

A device that twitpics from my dog's collar every X minutes. I'd like to take a glance at what my dog's day is filled with. He seems very busy. This may be more fun with a cat though. Especially one that goes outside (though you'd need an E

Filter or customize your tv ads. I hate it when a horror movie ad comes on and I have to scramble to change the channel. Similarly, I may like watching John&Kate+8, but that doesn't mean I want to watch the typically associated feminine

Absolutely, I love it that Zed is putting himself out there and dishing the dirt, but I'm also glad not everyone is doing that. It reminds me a bit of the Howard Stern phenomenon.

I love this. I was just torn about learning Merb and worried about how the Rails community was slowing down. This should inject some much needed energy as well as introduce some of Merb's awesome features into Rails. Great move.

The major difference there is that China caters to expat enclaves because they have money, just like US caters to Jewish enclaves. Yes, I agree it's elitist, but that doesn't make it any less 'real'. It's part of today's China. Your example
