The Darfur Genocide is still happening, is on a much larger scale than Gaza and despite media coverage, the people who are very worked up about the Israeli actions don’t seem to care. I wonder why that is.

No, he specifically referred to things such as eg China’s social credit system, the gamification of certain workplaces and the Unabomber. I wouldn’t trivialize his overall point.

The article is primarily about breaking up certain technology companies into their broad constituent parts and mandating interoperability, presumably by law. That seems a lot more realistic than your average person self-hosting, which almos

Note: 1 ppt == 1 ng/L. The EU limits are 500 ng/L for the sum of all PFAS in drinking water. Canada has an "objective" of 30 ng/L but I don't know how well it's enforced. The US proposal is for 4 ng/L

Judged by number of war-related deaths per capita, we are living in the most peaceful time in human history. The last major conflict was the Second Congo War in the ‘90s, which killed around 5.4 million people and involved a bunch of Africa

Comment I saw on Ars: >Interestingly enough, "Jia Tan" is very close to 加蛋 in Mandarin, meaning "to add an egg". Unlikely to be a real name or a coincidence.

How so? It looks a lot like a less-rich Java, whose type system has existed for literally decades. In fact, the generics syntax and type erasure was directly influenced by Java.

I assumed the original poster was talking about extant wars, not threats. This doesn’t even rate compared to say the Cuban missile crisis or even just the normal state of the world in the ‘80s.

Java has in-memory file systems that are essentially geared for this exact use case, eg jimfs[0]. You create your filesystem and any files you need when your tests are starting up, and your classes talk to them rather than the “real” ones.
