But then there's the size... The novelty is the size of these devices. I also run Word and Excel on a 386 at 40 Mhz but it was a full tower not a credit card sized box.

I understand that Microsoft does not want to perpetuate Windows XP support but, for this single reason, I will not be able to upgrade to VS 2012. This means missing on the latest c++ features and also means maintaining two developement tree

Funny that so many posts here are in the past tense. I still write brand new VB6 code every other day and I suspect that there are many thousands like me that have a large and old codebase that needs to be extended because the users keep as

I do see a difference between the portrait monitor and the others (it seats between two TN 24' Samsungs) but it is perfectably acceptable for writing code.

What you say is true if you rotate the cheaper TN based monitors. I have a Dell 24' monitor in portrait mode and it looks just fine as it is an IPS monitor.

It is a pity that the article does not explain why the change. I assume that the MIT license is more permissive than an LGPL license but since LGPL allows use in closed source projects what else does MIT brings to the table?

I do think it matters a lot. If the Windows and Mac platforms are only accessible through App Stores then we, developers, will have to pay whatever royalty or percentage those companies see fit to charge. We may also lose the ability to pub

There are a few other studies on this matter both indicating effect and lack of effect of the OLPC in Math and Literacy (this study mentions them in introduction). Apparently, the OLPC has not produced very good results in Literacy and Math

Cannot agree more. Paper publishing is no longer necessary at all (maybe with a few exceptions). Scientists should be publishing to an online application with universal access where their peers could review and comment on the papers. The cu

I can sell any book I buy. Some books can become collectibles and attain a high value. A private library of a few thousand books can be a very nice heirloom (or donation). These are some of the factors that make me think that books are wort

We can learn what we don't understand. To use a current example, in modern user interfaces there are two types of metaphors: the ones you can deduce by looking at them (a push button affords to be pushed) and the ones you learn (clicking un

Great article and don't give up. One thing you missed was that you could do contract work for part of the year and then work the rest of the year on your idea. In the UK (where I am) contract rates are two or three times permanent rates so
