Kotlin has generics that are in most circumstances reified enough ;). Optionals of Java8 and Guava are a terrible idea. @Nullable is just an annotation. Null-safety built in the language is the only way to go. You could always argue that a

Kotlin is not CoffeeScript for Java. Kotlin is Java done much better. Null as syntax, extensions with receivers, reified typing, type-safe builders, first-class lambdas, sealed classes, co-routines and so much more... Kotlin is my language

Not meaning to praise WhatsApp, but infrastructure can by definition never be "solved". Infrastructure is always messy and needs maintenance.

I use pandoc to convert the electron API-doc from markdown to XML. Then I use XSLT to create kotlin bindings: https://github.com/fab1an/kotlin-electron-api XSLT still rules for content-transformation.

I understand that. I don't really mind though, because a) most people will never put in that effort to search my history and b) I trust that I will be able to find a proper excuse/response to anyone who would "attack me with

Off-topic question: Why do people use throwaway accounts here on HN? Why is it so important that nobody knows who the real person behind posts is?

You can call it stupidity and it keeps growing since many years. I guess TV started it. Main reasons for it are a mixture of loss of introspection and completely unrealistic expectations due to constant medial input and constant communicati

Had to write postscript for "introduction into stackbased programming" at university. We choose to make complex cylcoid "animations". We controlled the "animation"-speed by using helper routines that slowed dow

I managed network state using react in the DOM itself, using hidden divs with custom onDidMount, onWillUnmount hooks. Worked really well.

I do use PostgreSQL wherever possibly. Add http://postgrest.com/ and nginx as a url-rewriting proxy and you have a performant, highly adaptable REST-Server.

Reminds me of an "efficient programming" exercise back at university. We had to implement getuid [0] as an executable in C, which just looks up /etc/passwd by name and returns a number. By using specialised trie-like

I thought about "temporary" cities that are actually gonna stay. How to do efficiently provide medical services. How to lay it out so that violence won't spread etc.

Hi, astreet, thanks so much for taking your time, I want to stress again that finalizers complicate and slows code in very complex ways. Just measuring the startup time isn't enough. You essentially slow down the garbage collector by g

I analysed react-native's performance issues with images and out-of-memory-errors a while back. Their (and their image library Fresco's) problem is that they make heavy use of object-finalizers, which is an error in Java and espec
