I don't really get what you're trying to say, go get does not execute arbitrary code.

Cargo.toml does not contain the source code of dependencies nor transient dependencies.

Yes but it's the fact that cargo can pull a massive unreviewed dependency tree and then immediately execute code from those dependencies that's the problem. If you have a repo with a Makefile you have the opportunity to review it

Rust makes me especially nervous due to the possibility of compile-time code execution. So a cargo build invocation is all it could take to own you. In Go there is no such possibility by design.

XDG is a Linux-centric spec. If we the people want it to be OS-agnostic, it needs to be vetted and designed for that. Until then I don’t see why macOS applications must adopt XDG, despite it being my preference.

You forgot to mention electricity costs. Old hardware is not only hot, loud, and underpowered - it’s power inefficient. IMO the money would be better spent building a tower or buying one preowned.

Unfortunately the government is winning, Apple’s ADP encryption is no longer available in the UK. The Online Safety Act was finally forced through after over 10 years. They’ll eventually get what they want in any case the same way a chisel

We don’t need ChatGPT Plus, we need police on the streets, we need functional healthcare, we need reliable public transport.

I think that’s another way of saying social cohesion is critical, and China has very strong cohesion whilst in Western countries it’s falling apart. We can’t stop dividing ourselves and fighting and I think social media is a major driver of

I disagree with this and what Dinnerbone says about locks. It doesn’t matter who file was intended for, it’s on the internet, if people want to use their silicon to do some mathematics to turn some numbers into some other numbers that’s the

Crafting good commits, and good PRs out of those commits is a skill just like how writing good code is. Unfortunately, too many people suck at the former.

Around the time DeepSeek R2 released there was chatter about how DeepSeek had had an “undocumented” PTX instruction to squeeze as much performance as possible from their hardware. My understanding is that it wasn’t any kind of secret instru

I think they’re crap tbh, born and raised in England. Pubs now charge way too much for alcohol, in many areas they have grumpy bouncers, rude service, and bad food. You can’t look away from your belongings for a moment without risking them
