I can't see any justification for an AI device. Smartphones are already a perfected form factor developed over decades. They consolidate many other devices people carried in the past. Now most people only need to carry a phone, and may

Aside from other security features already mentioned Go also doesn't execute code at compile time by design. There is no airtight technical solution, for any language, for preventing malicious dependencies making it into your applicati

Remember when they arrested Pavel Durov? I don't buy their official reasoning. Dear European friends, our leaders are tightening the screws. If we don't make our voices heard this is only going to get worse. https://x.c

You're not really supposed to 'export' keys. Any time you move a key you risk exposing it. The idea of PKI is that only public keys move, the private key stays in one place, ideally never seen.

Secretive is a bit friendlier to set up but I'll probably switch to this anyway so I have one less app on my computer. Plugging my blog post for how to achieve this on Windows 11: https://cedwards.xyz/tpm-backed-ssh-key

Yes, I watched a video[0] about using CHECKs and pg_jsonschema to do this in the past. However this only checks for conformance at insert/update time. As time goes on you'll inevitably need to evolve your structures but you won&#x

Stuffing data into JSONB columns always makes me feel uncomfortable. Not necessarily for performance/efficiency reasons. You also loose the strong schema that SQL gives you, you don't get to use constraints. You might as well use

Going to hijack this to ask a question that’s been on my mind: does anybody know why there’s no agentic tools that use tree-sitter to navigate code? It seems like it would be much more powerful than having the LLM grepping for strings or re

I don't even know what the selling point of AI is for regular people. In the 60s it was possible for a man to work an ordinary job, buy a house, settle down with a wife and support two or three children. That's completely out of t

That’s funny. I spotted a similar issue in their Go SDK[1] a few years back. I was pretty appalled to see such a basic mistake from a security company, but then again it is Okta. [1]: https://github.com/okta/okta-sdk-g

I see. It sounds like it would be a source of countless headaches, and I don’t think I’d ever want to do something that risks breaking the program like that, but I guess that’s why I’m not a game programmer.

Could you explain a bit more about that code path optimisation? Why wouldn’t the compiler eliminate dead code? It seems like a very haphazard blunt force optimisation method.

Apple seems to be avoiding building server hardware for some reason. It seems like a big opportunity, besides AI, the power efficiency of their chips would surely be attractive for datacentres. I think momentum is building for moving away f

I think us software people tend to think in absolutes. Yes, completely banning VPNs is very difficult. But for a totalitarian government, reducing VPN usage by say 60% is a win. You only have to make it difficult enough for the layman.

Yes, I believe this too. The internet is heading the way of balkanization - politically divided subnetworks. Archival services are more important than ever, as well as software such as Tor, WireGuard, and v2ray.

As a 24 year old this is the biggest kick in the teeth, and I had no say in the matter because I wasn't old enough to vote. Apparently the EU is in discussion with the UK to continue the Youth Mobility Scheme - I hope it happens.

I'm talking about true horizontal scaling where load is sharded across replicas. Active-passive is easy. Handling web traffic is also easy. Backend business logic is not so easy. If you're message driven you can maybe have a set o

Big instances are cheap relative to the cost of implementing horizontal scaling (at the app layer), plus engineering cost of Kubernetes or whatever your preferred orchestrator is, plus the heavy cloud tax on going "cloud native."
