I did Peace Corps (US overseas volunteer program) a few years ago in my mid-20s. I spent three and a half years living and working in Burkina Faso in West Africa. I was teaching basic computing (think kids who have never touched a computer)

I could certainly write a lot more than that on the topic, as could any decent writer. What one needs to learn about and one writes about is not necessarily the same thing. Again, I think the original comment here was more of a general s

I assume boznz meant an entire (different) article could be written with that headline. One can certainly call this or the theoretical opposite article spin.

Some very interesting posts on this blog. I particularly enjoyed the 2014 FTC "year in review" post[0], but was sad to find none for other years. [0] https://writing.kemitchell.com/2015/02/13/FTC-201

So much this. I am genuinely concerned about the direction of discourse and society in general with the way mass communication on the Internet has played out. Just look at how the damn president of the US communicates in tweets - short, aut

I feel the "correct horse" method is bad advice. Though, certainly not terrible. I actually followed it for a while and it works amazingly well for memory, but over time I was convinced that the best route is a password manager wi

There has been lots of discussion surrounding that comic. I have read a few articles over time and ultimately landed, one way or another, on considering it bad advice. Here is some info from a quick search: https://security.stack

The initial tweet was not even snarky. It was just trolling. As with most trolling, it should have simply been ignored. The responses are the damaging aspect here. "Our salaries are low" and "we don't have any EAs"

I can think of many reasons to bother. In the context of the article being discussed, it can be argued that Google is presenting sites' content without clear attribution. Preventing the need for the user to click-through also limits ad

Interesting. Thanks for your insight. My line of thinking was on working with "what is the user asking" vs. "what is the user looking for" in a way that could be applied regardless of the information being searched (by,

Pardon my ignorance, but would such a service need to be specific to a site? I'm wondering if there is a business (or perhaps better yet, non-profit) opportunity to provide data to drive something that can be tacked on to individual si

This really does seem like a big problem. What are some sites that do site search well? Is there currently a good way to implement something even half as good as Google locally without a major lift?
