That's interesting - the rental market here (western NY) has been the opposite, at least as of the last time I looked a few months ago. I assume you mean high vacancy rates rather than low.

"Wednesday, August 04, 2004" Pretty positive it's been posted here before too.

Affiliate codes are usually hidden in the URL, though. You don't even notice them unless you're paying attention (though most bloggers, LJers, etc seem to disclaim the referral lest someone else point it out).

Commenting that you've flagged is considered bad form at HN (it's in the rules). I have trouble resisting sometimes myself.

To me, it gets the same point across more simply, clearly, and quickly.

Yes, but at least that one password is not stored across a multitude of sites with varying security.

That assumes you know people are hashing (or more specifically, which few passwords are hashed out of this enormous database you've stolen). How do you tell a random password from a hashed one as an attacker?

Hulu has been doing a pretty terrible job with ads, at least in my personal experience. Quite often there will only be one (or maybe two) unique ads that play during an episode - the same ad over and over, 2-6 times. Also, one suspects they

It's not like it was designed, much less with any advantage in mind - just a cultural artifact that developed differently than most of us are used to.

I loved my Moka for awhile, but in the end it lost out to the ease of the k-cup machine at work. Most days I just don't want to spend 8-10 minutes making a cup (between prep, brewing, and cleanup).

There was at least one forecast, but as noted it was hard to draw any real conclusions from it. However, there is also a fair bit of data on past elections and voting trends - which the data from this election departs from remarkably.

I block ads I notice - a nice catch-22 for ad purveyors.

I can't recall the last time I saw an ad on reddit, but it's quite possible I blocked them myself at some point. I would be genuinely surprised if most technically-savvy people didn't do the same.

I found the toolbar to be useless at best. I uninstalled it after a week. It blocked maybe one "junk" domain and false positived on three. And really, it's an even worse idea than NoScript - what harm is seeing ads on a parked domain going

I know nothing about flight recorders, but offhand it would make sense to me for them to have some sort of transponder. Maybe the requirement of having a power source is unrealistic.

When is there ever anything especially remarkable about New Yorker covers? Personally, I think producing that on an iPhone is reasonably impressive. Sort of like art done with a mouse in oekaki or mspaint.

You can get an Asus router with a USB port for $45. Don't think I'd pay $40 for the USB port minus the router.

Huh? My phone cost $140, and it was a pretty cheap model. Batteries are $20.

Hunt/Thomas use "tracer bullets" as a term for prototyping in The Pragmatic Programmer. It's not an uncommon analogy.

This requires installing shady coupons.com software, which as far as I can tell is essentially "coupon drm" + adware. This is in addition to having to provide email + name. Not Hacker News and not worth a chicken dinner to me.

It's not a new thing, either - it would've continued to receive pretty much zero attention if it weren't for the Adblock mess.

Do those type of startups exist? Certainly there are people that think a mistimed launch or tipping off competitors would be a disaster for their site, but they're probably wrong.

I had trouble with left and right for a long time. Then, one day on an elementary school ski trip, another kid indicated he wanted to go right at the top of a hill. I somewhat embarrassedly admitted I wasn't sure which way that was. Respons
