10 seconds (or 16?) doesn't seem that great - XP boots that fast for me. I didn't watch the video though, and most of my boot speed is due to my Intel SSD.

Yes, damn those governments and their insistence on rationality and safety and all that nonsense.

Actually, through reading internet minicelbrity TheFerrett, I know there are extensive forums dedicated to that. I suspect the forums still win.

It looks like the link now points there; I assume it was fixed. Shouldn't this comment be deleted now if that's the case?

The "finally" in the ad at the top is very annoying. I've always been able to "share & syncronize hi-res photos among friends!". Maybe divvyshot does it better, but there's no "finally" about it.

Generally maybe, and especially currently, but you ought to be able to find something if you look hard enough.

I love Big Picture - it's a great example of a US newspaper taking advantage of the digital format - but I agree it belongs on Reddit.

They don't need to break it, Skype already offers backdoor access for governments.

Find it yourself if you care. I don't, especially. It was on Reddit within the past 6 months, but it's impossible to find things on Reddit. I'm not about to go googling about for it, personally. Edit: Ok, ok, "fake" found it: http://news.c

The saying is irrelevant, whether it's wrong or not. I shouldn't have even added it, lest I give you another way to deflect.

Whoosh. Doing something is completely different than knowing about something. Parenting is likely the best way for a person to learn how to parent (though supplementing reading, mentoring, and so on will likely be even better), but reading

I recall a story about a case where a US government agency put a video file up on a server, linked to it in CP forum(s), and then traced the IPs of and got warrants for whomever downloaded the file. The catch? The file was nothing but stati

Yes. Reading a solid scientific study will give you more valid insight than experience.

Your being a parent gives you no special insights. It gives you anecdotes, nothing more.

That should be very, very obvious based on the cost. However, I guess it's good to repeat it because it's apparently not obvious to some people. For what you're paying, it's actually a fine value. It's only for toy sites and such, but it's

This has been posted regularly to Digg, Reddit, etc for years. Guess it's HN's turn - though I'm surprised it hasn't come up already.

My point was you get (comparatively) a heck of a lot of storage plus pretty decent performance with a SSD. You better /really/ care about IO to be paying that much per GB - and some people do.

From a quick google, it looks like the 80GB model starts at $2400. Hard to call that competitive with SSDs, except soley on performance. Should be very interesting for "dream machine" desktops once you can boot from one.

I think those "tricks" are a little simple and probably don't deserve to be on the front page of HN, but they're not targeted at "someone dedicated to gaining access to your machine". They're targeted at reducing your profile to someone tro

Ditto. I spent 60 seconds trying to figure that out and left. The only advantage over flickr I can see is that it's free - but even that is apparently only for alpha.

In my junior high, there was a reading program where you could get some fairly dinky prizes for passing a test to prove you had read a book. I cheated that system pretty savagely - I would skim a book, look up cliff notes on the internet, a

You can argue about whether he will or won't - I'm on the "likely will" side - but the only way to know is for Riverbank to say something. The maintainer of PyQT has said on the mailing list he's "thinking about it", and when I emailed them

"Probably earn millions"? You a) don't seem to be following the case, where the people running it credibly claim to be pretty much broke, b) don't seem to know much about such websites - they're almost universally giant money sinks.
