I think it depends. In general, I prefer using expression, but there are cases where using sizeof is better (where better may be clearer, more maintainable, etc...). I think casting malloc is useless in C (not only semantically, but from a

You missed the explanation: a char is always 1 byte, because in C the definition of byte is char. The wrong assumption is 1 byte == 8 bits.

The US outlier may be explained by other variable. For example, church attendance may be positively or negatively correlated with wealth, depending on the state, which suggests a more complex relationship, at least in the US. Besides being

To be fair, you would have to compare to what happens if it were not legalized under similar conditions in the case of Japan, but I agree with you that the cases where prostitution is legal does not pave well for extending it in general if

OTOH, I have lived for more than 6 years in Japan, which also have a culture of having things which look complex, and I think the OP is closer to what I have seen than Zed Shaw on that particular aspect. I still don't understand why, but Ja

Gender and sex are different things for once. I think many people who are against the usual "men and women are different" idea think that that most differences are a consequence of the culture more than genetic predisposition. Pushed to the

The law (and law enforcement) system is very hard to understand for a foreigner used to western systems - maybe one of the most weird thing. One of thee most surprising thing is how little respect law enforcement people get, and their total

Actually, that's not exactly true. The japanese system relies heavily on confession, and without the presence of lawyers. They are sometimes denied food, toilet usage, etc... for days. Several people sentenced to death following confession

In the same spirit, I once removed a chroot tree, forgetting I bind mounted /etc into it. It took me half a day to recover from that. Another one, even more stupid, is to recover a "backup" of /var, done without the proper rights to it. I n

You are making the assumption that the information quantity is a good measure of the complexity, which is far from obvious. It is also wrong in general for the genetic code (for example, many organisms have a much bigger genetic code than h

Another point worths mentioning is the recurring, bogus argument about GC, non-determinism and comparison with malloc. If you think malloc is any more deterministic than gc, you are kidding yourself: think about what happens when malloc giv
