Don't write sentences. Write bullet points. Arrange those bullet points into groups. That becomes your table of contents. Continue to add more bullet points over time, and rearrange them as necessary. Eventually, you'll get the pi

On the surface, this sounds like a fine thing. Who doesn't want accessible websites? But it really opens a can of worms. What's a place of public accommodation? With brick-and-mortar, it's easy; if you have a physical locatio

The UN can "force" rules upon us if we sign an agreement allowing them to do so. If we sign a treaty agreeing to abide by the rules set by a UN agency, then they can impose such rules, and under the US Constitution, such rules hav

Two thoughts: First, $12/pound is too expensive. Yes, I know you've got delivery and other costs, and it's best to start high. But know you'll need to reduce the price over time. Second, consider pitching this to the ket

I love the Institute for Justice and the types of cases they take on. This one, unfortunately, is weak. If we say that paid health advice is protected speech, then we can no longer have licensing requirements for doctors who merely give adv

It bothers me that I see an increasing number of apps that run a local web server. I've got half a dozen apps, mostly development tools like pgAdmin, that force me to run the app and then access the UI through a browser. How many such

This is completely, utterly wrong. I was involved in a gerrymandering case in the 1990s. The group that brought me in was challenging the Illinois congressional map, which had been drawn by Democrats. It was, and is, atrocious. Back then, t

How are temp tables or CTEs more tightly tied to a schema than the original query? They both reference the same set of tables and columns, and both depend on indexes being in place. A schema change will break both, in equal measure.

It isn't clear to me why so few of these optimization articles talk about temporary tables. They are my go-to solution for many situations. Temporary tables are great because they break the problem down into smaller pieces. They make t
