That's a good point, but I'm debugging much less often than running make, so when I want to disable parallel builds I just `unset` the MAKEFLAGS variable. For me this is a nice default.

I have a Feedly link to their research (now a.i.) blog, and if you have a premium subscription to Feedly you can incorporate IFTTT to do something (e.g. send you an email) whenever a new post is available. I'm sure it's possible
