context is always important. It's bad if wages are also kept stagnant (and maybe artificially so by whoever's employing those people). For your 1 year old, it's not a problem if that $1000 is invested in say an S&P fund

I would say the US is a hegemony like any other...with the benefit of structural hedges of the Madisonian system to avoid the most egregious abuses of power. Not perfect but better than tyrants of the past...

There must have been some kind of calculation. Akin to some sort of overall spec. This vaguely reminds me of some prior HN article about a Spanish submarine that ended up being a laughingstock because the engineer in charge accidentally a

I hope this is still true - there are moves, at least in the services division and associated products, that seem like short term money grabs, vs. part of a long term "customer experience-first" vision....

I wonder if a lot of it is also going to supplier/worker infrastructure...Apple tried it in limited ways but I think a lot of it fell through due to, either US workers not having the right sort of technical education, vs. all the infra

I would agree with this seeing public statements by LASD (Villeneueva) here in LA and his colleagues in Riverside and Orange Counties, as well as counterparts in police unions, and also unofficial chatter on twitter and elsewhere. It'

i suspect the academic lab's definition of open source is more "loosey goosey", i.e., "is the technique published in a paper/poster and can it be reimplemented by our grad students/postdocs?" If so...Ope

I wonder if the "most private" way to do this would be to distribute as a jupyter notebook or some sort of local bundle/distro to run as a local webapp?

I kind of wonder if parts of the program would be useful, i.e. make a "platform" like the fighter plane version of React.js or Swift UI and manufacturers and plug and play a new airplane out of the tech developed for it?
