My experience with Wikis are that are only religiously updated by 1-2 people. Everyone else just kind of goes meh. But you absolutely have to document things somewhere that is shared for the bus scenario. My requirements for a wiki: 1) Awes

It's a function of the HN echo chamber. I used Bootstrap to quick do something at work, and everyone loved it. They've never seen bootstrap, or anything like it before. These are technically inclined IT people, but they're not bleeding edge

I wasn't thinking that, but I was wondering what percentage were incremental upgrades. In other words, I install 1.0, then 1.0.1, then 1.0.2,... Incremental updates like that could artificially inflate the download numbers. Take that and mu

For myself, I don't have too many outstanding favors at any one time. I tend to know who has helped me out. Even had I forgot, I'm sure just talking to the person (or at least when they redeem their favor), I'd remember. That being said, so

I agree that this site looks like a pretty blog. In terms of lean startup, Wordpress was a good idea. Take a look at some other magazines (that may also have print versions), and online newspapers. I don't think the design is that important

My work (not Google) get compelled reboots sometimes for patches. We're able to delay them suitably long enough, so most of the time you just go ahead and shut down at the end of the day. Either that, or you hit reboot at lunch. Everything

I would recommend Clark Howard's investment guide. The link is on the home page: http://www.clarkhoward.com/ He's been very successful on the radio for teaching people how to save money, and a lot of it's sound advise. I think he's even r

I wonder what the M:F ratio of the name "Alex" is. I agree that it's not really gender specific, but I only know 1 "Alexandria", and she doesn't go by "Alex". This could be a function of my university (70:30 M:F), or it could be generationa

Besides the aforementioned virtual worker websites, you could try the monthly freelancer thread on HN, but I don't think there's too many sysadmin types that lurk there. It's worth a shot. I'd be more than willing to answer some of your que

My team has an XWiki. It works well enough, and there are a number of plugins and things to get XWiki pages to update in vim or emacs through a Perl RPC library. I don't like it as much as Confluence (paid), but it's at least syntactically

In short: you should take all of your assumptions. Do you know why you've made this assumption? Otherwise, it's something you don't know. There's more than that, but it at least gets you questions, which can spawn more questions. You don't

I agree. "A few hundred employees" and the average amount of time to be considered a senior engineer is only 4 years? That's either a title for title's sake, or the actual engineering department is all of 10 people.

I'm not entirely sure that BCC's new redesign is rendering correctly. From the computer image it looks like your blue top area should be further down. Then in Firefox the effect is even more extreme. Chrome (latest, Win7): http://tinypic.c
