My dad worked as a general counsel for a power company for a long time, and he told me they basically had a budget for how much they'd pay in violations of the Endangered Species Act related to bird deaths around their wind turbines.

Also (sort of) the crux of one of my favorite horror manga, Biomeat: Nectar, which is about a genetically engineered animal that eats "garbage" (basically anything but metal, glass, and stone IIRC) and can be harvested for food, b

From the abstract, it looks like they just gave the participants a survey, and did an MRI. Actual time spent with the participants probably wasn't more than a few hours for just that (probably for cost reasons too).

I think that's sort of related to #2, "to get even for some perceived slight" although parent is specifically mentioning organization and not an individual in the org.

No one is getting murder or rape convictions removed from the record. This is considerably smaller scale stuff, and the story itself mentions that two men jointly fought to have news of their conviction removed, one who got 6 months in jail

In that particular instance they had a clear playbook to follow, which was the film industry. I don't know there's quite as direct a parallel between game content and user data sharing / selling as there was between game cont

They were banned for being inhumane, not not militarily useful. The international community doesn't like the idea of military actors running around with weapons that permanently cripple but don't kill; landmines are probably a bet

The quiz app wasn't the real data source though was it? People who want to take the quiz have to press "yes" on a menu that vaguely mentions "We need your friends list" and things like that, and those permissions we

Can the title be changed to note that this is from 2017? It's new to me, so I assumed it was recent (but it was also posted on Google+....).

I recall earlier news stories that Waymo's first settlement proposal last year included demands for a public apology from Uber. Is this that? I wonder if Uber is also paying $1b like Waymo initially demanded, or if that part changed as

My sister's dog is the same way with counting people in the house. She's a rescue, so we aren't sure exactly what her lineage is, but she has a color pattern somewhat reminiscent of a border collie, and she tries to herd peop

The tire was not in wide circulation. There were only around 160,000 ever made, and most of those were presumably sold for delivery vehicles, which is what they were supposedly designed for. The problem is that some number of those 160,000

When I used Venmo for the first time, I had this concern as well, but the cost of the transaction is private to everyone outside of the parties involved (and this isn't an options choice). I switched all my transactions to private, per

I grew up watching Warren Miller movies, but wasn't aware of some of the recent drama the article brings up. It's nice to hear that in that copyright issue he stepped in. I sort of imagined him as the kind of person who would take

Speaking of Sanderson, I'm a big fan of his initial Mistborn trilogy (from which he takes his reddit username), haven't read the second set though. It had by far the most unique fantasy universe magic I'd seen.
