(1) Is a problem for sure. Proprietary devs always overestimate the value of their code, and lack of open source scrutiny typically makes code quality worse. (2) Definitely. (3) VC culture can be an issue, though Facebook might not be the b

Building proprietary tech is what builds proprietary tech. Facebook developers also use the power grid, but that fact shouldn't divert rage towards solar panels. And there very much are open source software projects specifically design

I also have strong feelings of frustration towards ROS but I have yet to see a viable alternating. Half the value of ROS is the community building robot specific packages on the ROS foundation. Any frustration with the system is certainly s

Making the corporate itself a felon is almost a joke. Zero chance this ends their defense contracts- they'll find a workaround. Assigning the felony to the corporation is just a sweet chance for the individuals responsible to offload r

I think a lot about the light-cone of information that spreads outward from every move I make. It seems that every action online, especially communications- results in a permanent footprint that ripples out forever, available to be studied

Social media is increasingly a battleground for bots. Real humans ironically become a voluntary force in this, as the bots only need to propagate an idea so far before people believe it enough to make it part of their identity. One idea is

I'm not sure I agree. Searching and summarizing are excellent uses of generative AI. It's very good at understanding meaning and intent- making it especially useful for detecting actors plotting against the state. That said, even

Supposedly much traffic is also being warehoused, including encrypted data, so that when decryption becomes easier it can all be read. Which means we might have to contend with a future where LLMs think about every email written, message se

Summarizing large bodies of text is one of the most proven applications of generative AI. Super useful if you're an analyst trawling through terabytes of private messages trying to find the ones who intend harm to the state. The troubl

As someone who works in embedded systems- I agree. Teams will deploy whole desktops to an embedded system if permitted to expand enough. Architectures will evolve to require hardware that can support the bloated stack. Even on power constra

Curious to learn more about how you did this. But I agree with your sentiment- we often surrender to the idea that ruthless evil has taken control without even trying to engage civically.

This is a strawman argument: You've setup a scenario where cash isn't very beneficial, and then show why it's not beneficial. Before the Equal Credit Opportunity Act, women could only use cash. Sure it would have been way coo

Because it's not true. Maybe mid-1800s, but by mid-1900s women could totally use cash. Not credit cards though, 1974 is when women were allowed to get those. In other words, the exact opposite of what that comment is saying.

What? You've completely reversed the facts here. Women couldn't get credit cards until 1974- they could ONLY use cash before that. The 1974 Equal Credit Opportunity Act is what outlawed refusing credit to women, https://

The whole basis of this suit is that a Purdue subsidiary went out of their way to market these pills as non-addicting. "Personal responsibility" in this case clearly lies on those actors, not the addicts.
