If we can't even trust UID separation to work, then the project of secure computing is hopeless. We've been working on UID separation for decades. If we can't get it right after all this time, what hope can Sandstorm possibly

RMS is not the Emacs maintainer... And even if he was, I don't believe he ever said "If LLDB successfully replaces GDB as the most used libre debugger, even then we still shouldn't support it in Emacs". He's not ins

How is that relevant at all? LLDB is a completely different debugger. The fact that I have to download an extra package to use LLDB doesn't affect my use of GDB at all. If LLDB eventually becomes as popular as GDB, I'm sure it wil

I prefer Emacs GUD over the built-in GDB TUI. I actually don't understand why anyone would use the built-in TUI; you have to learn new things anyway, why not learn the Emacs interface which not only looks way better but is more reliabl

It seems like the main thing making that process fast is the fact that it's doing polling. But Linux does polling too, when there are enough packets coming in. Likewise, if you really are dropping packets very early in the networking s

What is a "Hybrid memory mapped stack"? Edit: Oh, you must be referring to the network stack. I thought you meant the program stack (you know, the place where automatic variables in C are allocated). (I'm still not sure what

In case you're talking about emacsclient, that has one, --socket-name, as the article says. If you actually are talking about "emacs" and not "emacsclient", then the argument you want is --eval '(setq server-so

gajim is the best graphical client for the Linux desktop. mcabber and profanity are both excellent terminal clients (I use mcabber). GNOME Empathy is also a decent client if you use the GNOME desktop.

The robust solution to this problem is not hardcoding the pipe buffer size and changing the size of pipe buffers within your program to match your hard coded value, but rather calling fgetconf to query the pipe buffer size for the pipe FD y

The only thing in this post that can be accurately called defensive is the use of "local" and "readonly". The rest is all just style preferences, which are rather subjective, and none of which are very appealing to me. T

It's important to read the full context. All that snippet means is that the GNU Emacs maintainer should be fine with adding new features to Emacs that are not portable to non-free platforms like Windows and Mac OS X. That is a perfectl

I'll say what I said in another comment: Isn't it fine to just use Emacs for this purpose? You don't have to use it as a general-purpose text editor if all you want to do with it is make ASCII art. Just as with any new thing,

Um... that's what this post is about? artist-mode is an text art editor. You don't need to use Emacs as an editor to use the "applications" built on Emacs, if that's your concern. Just as with any new application yo
